ok so i'm setting up my 120g and using dead rock and dead sand.i dosed with dr tims and temp has held 81.5. dosed with dr tims pure ammonia to 3ppm.took 8 days for ammonia to test at 0ppm,now nitrites have been at 5ppm and have held there for 4 days.i'm starting to see brown spots(diatoms i believe).my question is does it seem im on the right path? should i redose ammonia or leave alone and wait for nitrites to go down?how long does the nitrite drop normally take?i know it all varries just looking for a good guestimate so i can plan ahead on a few things like water change and things when cycle is done.thanks.oh and my wifes freshwater tanks fish love your diy food i bought lol, thanks for that as well.

you are on the right path, wait for the nitrite to drop...possibly could take the same amount of time the ammonia took. You could add a smidge of ammonia but that bacteria will be fine to wait until the nitrite drops. Then when you have only nitrate you can add more ammonia and then monitor to see it convert to 0 within a 24 hour period including the nitrite. Then do a water change.
