This suck's i came home tonight to find one of my bartletts anthias dead on the floor. The worst thing abought it is i have been trying to get a group of at least four of them for 5 or 6 months. These fish fish dont ship well so the mortality rate is low and you can only get ahold of them in the winter most of the time. But on the upside i have a petstore that have three more in their tanks for me at least as of last thursday, if the didnt die to lol.
To add insult to injury, I just built a hood for my tank last weekend. If i had it on this would of never happened! Live and learn i guess.
Im  wondering if i should just varnish and urethane it inside and out to protect against water. For those of you that have built their own what is the best paint, varnish or sealear, etc to use to protect it against humidity and rotting away.

I'd like to know this also. I'm going to be finished and applying polyurethane to my stand and canopy this coming week and it would be nice to know if I'm suppose to seal all of it. It makes sense that I should, but I'd like to know ahead of time if it would be a waste of my time. Thanks!!

I used a marine grade white paint on the inside of my last hood. It's a little expensive, but it provides the kind of protection it sounds like you're looking for. The one I have now is bare wood...I'm considering doing the same to it.

Menards is where I bought mine. It comes in quart cans and I think was between $15 and $20.

Brian, are you going to be staining or painting the canopy?

If you already have it stained I would just get some polyurethane and coat the whole thing, inside and out.

If you're going to be painting it, I would do what AJ said, go with the marine grade paint. Usually people go with white or black if they paint them.

Just to clarify, I only used the white paint on the inside. The outside was stained and covered in poly.

I used high gloss white appliance paint on the inside. I believe it is an epoxy based paint. I gave it around 3 coats and it sealed everything nicely and is very reflective. I used a different white paint on the outside though. I think appliance paint was around $5 a can and is spayed on. It was pretty easy to do and looks great.

white is best, dont use black as it will absorb light and heat, you want to reflect as much light possible back into your tank. i've used killz before on my tank stands on the inside. but i've never built a hood
