I love the machine shed, though I have only ever been for breakfast. They have an amazing buffet on weekend morning s starting at 6:30 or so. I would call the prices moderate. The buffet is around $15 a person, which is on the high side for breakfast, but it is well worth it.
Being someone from California, it is what best represents Iowa to me, in terms of restaurants.They also sell neat little souvenirs that represent Iowa in various ways. People that are traveling might find that interesting.

There are way too many good places downtown to even start listing them off. Right next to where MACNA will be is All-Play which has a restaurant and arcade + lazer tag.

 

My favorites are Hoshi sushi on universty by Drake and ohanas steak house in west des Moines

Some high priced ones would be Centro and Splash. Late night food/different & awesome would be Fong's Pizza
