Zach, your own article concludes that there was no evidence that it definitively works; however, he concedes that doesn't mean it definitively doesn't work. Nothing kills scientific discovery faster than ending experimentation without any firm, conclusive evidence.

I would rather take someone's personal experience over an article that says it may or may not work. Especially when I haven't heard anyone say garlic hurts, and the fact that cure options are limited in an "in tank" situation.

Garlic does boost the immune system, which helps defend the inhabitants against Ich. But it does not in and of itself kill Ich. That is the point here.

There are ways that Ich can encapsulate in the gills and even withstand copper treatment, so depending on the strain, there may be no way to actually fully eradicate it. Keeping a low-stress environment and feeding properly will help to keep fish healthy enough to fight off infection. Garlic is really a preventative measure that apparently can help the inhabitants fight off an existing Ich infestation, but that doesn't mean it will definitively cure the inhabitants every time.

But as has been said, it definitely cannot hurt.

Garlic also prevents aquatic vampirism, as will arranging your liverock in a cross shape.

This is true. However anecdotal evidence provided by hobbyists is not part of the scientific method. That is my end point with regards to the article. There is no definitive evidence, as such we need to be cautious when telling other aquarist that garlic is a cure for anything. I certainly don't mind using it. And a bunch of my food had it in it. I just want to be clear that garlic should be used as a supplementation to actual treatment. Not a end all.

And garlic boosts a HUMAN immune system. It doesn't take an ichthyologists to tell you that the human and fish immune system works differently. And fish INJECTED with garlic showed a boost. I would wager that the general caustic nature of the garlic played a role rather than the immune response. The encapsulation is called encysting. A cyst is a defensive ability that parasites have developed to elongate their life and raise their success rate. And cyst is near indestructible to a hobbyist as we don't have access to real antibiotics or antipatasitic drugs.

Cipper. Freshwater dips. And hyposalinity are your best defenses.

Garlic doesn't hurt no. I just get tired of hearing people saying garlic will fix ich. It simply will not. And GO is right. It has been scientifically proven to cure vampirism I. The marine aquarium.
