Things were going pretty well after my tank upgrade, until last week. I started getting diatoms on my rocks, and sand. The conch and various snails take care of the sand pretty well, but my rocks are another story.
Around this time last year I had a very similar thing happen, I assume they are diatoms, but wonder if they could be dinoflagellets? Most of my sps seem relatively unaffected, as long as I blow the crud off them with a turkeybaster. Polyps and my toadstool leather are another story. Could there be something else going on, and if so what should I do? I did a 20 gallon waterchange earlier this week, it actually seemed to make things worse. I'm using reef crystals salt.
    Test results
    Nitrate 0
    Phosphate 0
    Alk low at 7
    Calcium low at 360

I may add that acans lobos don't seem to mind it, but torch and frogspawn don't extend as much.

if i remember from previos post your tank is a 120? what do you have for water circulation? possable more water flow will help get rid of it.

If it is dinos, you should start to see some snail fatalities as they are toxic.

Its nearly impossible to tell from the resolution of your pix, but it doesnt look like dino's from what I can tell. Dino's would be stringy with air trapped inside....like little balloons on strings. I've been battling them for awhile now.

One thing that would probably help would be to get your Alk & Ca back up to where they should be. What's the TDS of your RO/DI water? how old& what type of lights? Turning them off for a few days can help, but until you resolve the source of them, it will just come back.

Best of luck to you that they arent dino's!

I haven't been following any of yout threads recently and it isn't easy to seach for them. My question is based on your statement that you just upgraded - can you elaborate? How long ago, how long did it take (rocks out of water) and did you move an existing sandbed?

Every time I move or create a major disruption in my tank I expect a diatom outbreak to some extent. The good news is that while an outbreak can be rather lengthy in a newly established tank, an outbreak from a move or upgrade is relatively short lived.

Just wanted clarification on your statement - if you upgraded several months ago this (most likely) isn't the issue as my outbreaks typically occur within the first week of so.

Scratch that - I just found your other post.

Looks like you upgraded about 40 days ago and rinsed out your sandbed?

If so - this is normal and time (patience) is one of the factors. I kow it's difficult as you have a great looking system and it's all gunked up with diatoms - we've all been there /DesktopModules/ActiveForums/themes/_default/emoticons/sad.gif

I replaced my sand and yes it was Early Feb that I upgraded.

I probably overreacted when posting this, I was getting nervous because the last time I had a similar outbreak it lasted 6 weeks and it took some of my corals several months to recover (the tank was about 5 months old at the time). This time, it completely vanished in about 8 days.
I also raised my alk to 8-9 and calc to 400-420.

    All is well

    Thanks
