I have been contemplating building a shallow reef for quite some time now. I am leaning toward this option due to size limitations on what can be ordered. Looking to build a tank with dimensions around 50" x 25" x 12". I have built a sump before but something about building a display tank makes me nervouse especially having enough water volume to do some damage. Being that the tank would be rimless I have my concerns. Anyone out there with tank building experience that could lend some helpful advice?

I built an acrylic shallow reef last winter. 32x24x13. Not rimless though.
I'm far from an expert, and my seams are not absolutely perfect, but it was fun, and relatively easy provided you have the right tools.

I like the shallowness; makes it easier work with, and I like having the ability to view the tank from the top.

I was leaning toward glass since acrylic is not readily available in my area. Shallow reef to me just looks cool and imo allows a more intimate experience with your livestock! I'm glad to hear there are others interested in the same thing. I was inspired by the guy on YouTube a long while back who has the valcano style liverock shallow reef. Simply beautiful
