Does anyone know if if a ballast set up for a mercury vapor bulb will fire an equal wattage metal halide bulb? The reason I ask is that I was given a yard light set that would normally go on a pole or the side of a garage/barn that came with a mogul base and ballast for a 175 watt mercury vapor bulb... I have some older 175 MH bulbs and was thinking about trying to retrofit this into the canopy on my small tank in my office...
Any thoughts or ideas would be appreciated...

In short, I think it might work, but is unsafe. I asked this similar question on RC a while back (also about spotlight modding into a DE MH setup) and to both responses electrical engineers (or they claimed to be, but they were reputable looking guys when I looked them up) told me it would be a fire hazard.
