ok, so for my new build i want the aquascape to be different, unique.i've done tons of reading on this and as everything else on the internet there are about the same number of people that say no as yes.what i think i want to do is make the display rock out of black pond foam and coat it with epoxy.any of you have opinions on this?

Did this in a 29g biocube, turned out pretty nice a few months down the road. I had it running for a year or so without any side affects. Just remember the foam REALLY expands!

I made my own rock out of white Portland cement, large course water softener salt, chicken feed(oyster shells) and a little fine reef sand. Cooked for a couple months. Very happy. I made a plywood mold of the tank to use as a form and split the pieces with plastic so I could disassemble them.

I can't speak on the foam, but I wonder how much filtering capacity they have. How poured will the epoxy be? Mine are very porous with lots of nooks and crannys for pods.

You used to hear about it when people made rock walls lining the back of the tank. My guess is that there are very few club members that have done it to share their experience.

The one thing I would watch for is making it so it sinks. You'll have to attach it pretty good to some base rock otherwise I imagine it would just want to float away on you.

I'd search some of the big boards and see if you can dig up any negative long term effects of the foam. I've never seen any, but I also don't follow those boards that closely.
