i am building my first sump.  looking at using 1/4" acrylic.  has anyone had problems using acrylic versus glass?
My son used acrylic for his sump and has problems with it staying in place.
    Thanks

If you use the correct glue for acrylic then you should be fine.  Using a regular super glue, or epoxy will only lead to problems down the road.  I would say use weldon 16, from research when looking to build some stuff out of acrylic, a lot of people say that it is easier to use. You will have to order it online is my guess, because there is not really in place that sells it locally.

Are building this entirely of acrylic? Or glass tank with acrylic baffles?

    hey Mary,

I have built several with good luck.

I have 2 that are 8 ft long, 2 ft wide, & 12 inches deep. If you go that big make sure you eurobrace it.

I put alot of baffles in mine to help break it up & added strength.

I am looking at using a glass tank with acrylic baffles. Sorry should have made that clear. ;-)

ya that is a little harder.

Instead get the exact measurement & goto a glass shop & ask them to be cut from scrap glass & bevel the edges.

I have done this several times & usually it is very cheap.

Silicone will work good then, it dont adhere very good to acrylic.

There's been issues reported getting the acrylic to stay in place with silicone...just as you mentioned.

Glass would be a better alternative.

I believe I spent around $20 for my glass baffles - 4 pieces.

I agree glass works best. Although i have used acrylic with success by sanding it where it comes in contact with the silicone.

Yeah, but can you drills holes or cut teeth into the glass? I'm planning the rubbermaid stock tank plan, and was assuming that acrylic baffles would work well for that.

    Opinions?

You can certainly drill glass...as long as it's not tempered.  Teeth?  Good luck with that.. /DesktopModules/ActiveForums/themes/_default/emoticons/rolleyes.gif
