Advice? Do Fish Need Total Darkness?

    Hey guys and gals, I am just wondering if fish do need total darkness to properly sleep/rest?

    All I have are two percula clownfish in a 10 gallon tank and a few corals. I have a LED light that sits on top of the Aquaclear 110 refugium that very dimly illuminates the tank during and also for about one hour before and after the main tank light cycle. The tank currently has about 7 hours of total darkness.

    What I am trying to know if it's possible for the refugium light to be on all the time so that I can have a lesser drastic Ph swings.

    Currently PH swings from ~8.0 to ~8.2 (night and day)

    That's a loaded question! Depends on who you ask. If your pH swings are only from 8.0 to 8.2, I wouldn't worry about that...those are not significant swings. Your corals need 8 hours of darkness for sure. Even running moonlights, one doesn't want to run them all night long. Think of the moon...some nights the moon shines bright, dimly/intermittently and no moon/cloudy. The fish just need to be able to sleep. HTH

    Yeah its kinda a wierd question, but cool and thanks man. It makes sense now.

    My lights shut off at 10 pm and are off until 11 am. No moon lights or anything.

    I have run moonlights for years, in the FW world discus breeders sometimes do 24hr lighting. I have never read a single problem on forums traced back to constant light, so I doubt it really matters much.
