I am going to get rid of all the clutter of wires and powerstrips under my tank by building my own power distribution center.  I am planning on making it with regular gang boxes and was contemplating a little automation as well. I have a couple older computers laying around and thought about using one to run my lighting and heaters and whatever... X10 modules seem to be the most cost effective way to do this, but i dont know if they will run the MH ballasts or if there are other issues i should be considering with my reef equipment. Any thought or suggestions would appreciated.

Do not trust X10's on heaters or anything else critical
They can be used with magnetic ballasts but I have found they do not work well with E-ballasts or flourecent ballasts

If it were me, I would look into a Aqua Controller and get a DC8, I've used X10 and still do use X10's on certain things but the DC8 is sooo much more reliable.
Better sell some more cars, they aren't cheap.

    :)

I've seen a number of them on RC lately for around $100. They go fast so you have to be really watching the buy/sell forum.

What Jeremy said. The problem with X10's is that they are VERY susceptible to line noise from TV's, VCR's etc. You can put filters on devices and even put thigs on your electrical service and it will still drive you nits why it doesn't work. I use them on several things but as Jeremy said nothing critical. I use a DC8 for critical stuff.
