I received a smoker from my wife for Father's Day and I wanted to try my hand at smoking.  Does anyone have any smoking tips, recipes or anything you wanted to share?

I don't either but I have used my Weber charcoal grill as a smoker with fairly good results. I just pile the coals on the sides of the grill, put a pan of water with soaked woodchips between them and put wood chips on the coals. Just keep the temps in the grill around 200 degrees and keep the smoke rollin' and your all good.

I just did a couple racks of baby backs for fathers day, I pulled the membrane off the underside, gave them a good coating of mustard (makes awesome bark), a generous amount of "Slap Yo' Momma" seasoning the night before, let them sit overnight in the fridge, got my grill rolling a cooked them for 5 hours at 200 degrees and they were feeekin AWESOME!

I'd love to have a real deal smoker someday but for now my grill will suffice.

    Good luck!

You will love it, very easy the hardest thing is keeping the temp locked into a certain temp.
Go to HyVee or Dahls ask for Pork Loin, it will weight somewhere from 8 to 10 lbs and be approx 24" long (you can cut it in half)
Rub whatever seasoning you like directly onto the loin
Get you smoker up to 225 degrees, once up to temp place loin in smoker and add wood chips/chunks
Smoke loin until the internal temp is 145 degrees
Pull loin and wrap in tin foil for 10 minutes
Slice into 1/2" pieces and enjoy
    Hope this helps

I use this same method to make pulled pork works great. Only diff is after 3 hours  smokeing it then goes into the oven covered for 2 more hours on low temp.

Craig, You can get rainchecks for anything they're out of; doesn't say anywhere in the ad that they won't do them.  Also, if you have a Fareway, they automatically price match Hy-vee's prices (if the price is not the same already, which it usually is, just show them the 2 day Hyvee sale ad and they will adjust it down.  Usually don't even need the ad even).  Fareway is usually on the ball though and already has the same price as Hy-vee /DesktopModules/ActiveForums/themes/_default/emoticons/smile.gif

Waverz- How do you keep your fire going, as I've found that Kingsford burns out fairly quickly. A friend at work suggested using lump charcoal instead of briquets. Do you add some as you go along? I've got a Weber and am anxious to do some ribs and such.

I just smoked a whole pork loin the other day. Injected it with mango pineapple juice and then made a brown sugar coconut rub. .smoked it for around 7 hours at 200 F. Turned out awesome. Did you get a gas or charcoal smoker? I have a charcoal and it's always a chore to keep the temp consistent. It's a lot of fun to just try things out too. It's always better to go low heat for a longer period of time!!!

It is a charcoal cooker.  I will be using lump charcoal and it should last easily throughout the cooking process.
