dried aragonite sand?

    my brother has close to 300lbs of sand he got when he bought a tank. previous owner emptied tank but left sand in it. its been in my brothers garage in the tank since sept. can i use some of it and rinse it really really really good?

    I used mine...had been dried in the basement since I drained my tank 2 years earlier. I just let all the crud in it kick start my cycle /DesktopModules/ActiveForums/themes/_default//emoticons/smile.gif

    Depends on how dirty it is, but I would give it at least one good rinse. There should still be plenty of "crud" after that to help start the cycle. I had received about 120 pounds of live sand with my recent tank purchase, but it was so full of "crud" that I just went out and got new sand. I put a single scoop from about an 8 oz cup of the live stuff in with the freshly rinsed new stuff, and it totally mucked up the rest just fine. It was SO dirty. I just didn't want to spend the time and saltwater to rinse it since it was still alive. If it was dead, it would have taken at least a dozen rinses and still would have had detritus in it.

    this sand was a deep sand bed in a fuge. i scrapped the top inch of nasty off and under that was bright clean non smelling sand. ill still rinse it good.

    Rinse with saltwater of course. :)

    I've heard of people just missing that key piece.

    really? never heard of that. usually just ro water... ill need more salt if i gotta make it just to dump down the drain.
