So I want to set up another tank and I have some dry rock if I put a piece of it in the sump of my tank that has been running for three years how long does it need to be in the sump before I can pull it out and put it in the new tank or do I just need to put it in the new tank and start a new cycle what's the best way to go in this situation

I know someone has an answer to this question where's everyone at? Also should I use some water out of the established tank to get this one up and going.

If you have just one piece of rock it won't do much to help with minimizing a cycle in the new tank. not enough biological filtration and bacteria available on one rock (unless the new tank is really small and rock is big )

If you took out most of the established rock, rinsed it off in salt water from your tank then put that in with half tanks worth of your water + new it may help minimize cycle but would probly still have a small one

    Ya what he said! :p:)

If you are just looking to get the bacteria started, put as much dry rock as you can in the sump or main tank for 2-3 weeks. Then transfer it to the new tank. you will still get the cycle for the new tank but you will get your bacterial and pods growing.

    Have fun!:D
