I have been checking out the local stores since I moved here and I find that they seem to have pretty severe algae infestations. The bubble algae is terrible and there seems to be other undesirable nuisance algae as well. What are those of you who purchase corals from these stores doing to prevent this from going into your tanks? I would think that the even quarantine may not be enough but perhaps there is something that I have not thought of.

I am not bashing on any of the local stores here in Des Moines, but I follow the same song and dance no matter what store I purchase from, no matter who I trade with or wherever I buy online. If I am just worried about parasites or disease, I use ReVive on all of my corals. If there is an algae issue with the coral, I use Coral Rx as my dip.

Basic practice for me: My primary dip I use is Revive, after using it, if there aren't any issues I can't resolve by using a tooth brush, I then dip it in Coral Rx after the coral is in normal saltwater for 24 hrs. I find that I resolve any issue with this method and am pest free.

    Hope this helps!!!!

I also use ReVive on my colonies before I frag them if they can be removed from the tank. If they can't, I use it on the frag itself!!!

I QT every purchase I make as well. I manually remove algae (as much as possible) during the acclimation/dip process. Cyano- baste it off during dip. If needed, I will remove frag from disc and place on a new one. Besides using CoralRx and Revive, keeping the QT ultra-low fpr nitrates and phosphate will starve out remaining algae/cyano. If those fail, I will use AlgaeFix and/or red slime treatment.

I agree that algae is a problem (Aiptasia and majanos too) for MANY stores (not just DSM) and some more than others. There are many possible reasons for this but I don't worry about it as I find good husbandry works wonders! I will not move a purchase out of QT until I am comfortable that I have done everything possible to protect the DT ;=)

I havent had to deal with many frags for my tank since I moved to DSM, but i use 3% peroxide and a syringe to drip on to the frag plugs. I wacks the algae pretty quick.
