I've been through quite a few tanks from planted to marine. This will be my last go at it. I finally have a nice place to have a tank where the wife won't complain about it. I'm doing an in wall in my basement office. It has a nice work/furnace room on the back side. I'm giong to try and make this a simple as possible.

    [*]Equipment

[*]Standard 20 Gallon Long with Black back and sides
    [*]MarcoRocks Reef Sand (Ordered 10/25/14)
[*]MarcoRocks Rocks (Two Island is what I'm hoping for)
    [*]Vortech MP10WES (Ordered 10/25/14)
[*]Buildmyled.com 30" 14k Medium Light Fixture with tank mounts and dimmer (Ordered 10/25/14)
[*]AC70 with mediabasket for eventual chemical filtration or possibly fuge (Ordered 10/25/14)
[*]BRS 4 stage RODI with auto shutoff (Ordered 10/25/14)
    [*]Cobalt NeoTherm 75 watt heater
[*]Proposed LIvestock

    [*]One or two clowns OR
[*]Goby & Shrimp Pair OR combo of the above
    [*]Other Suggestions?
Future

I hope to keep this as simple as I can
Probably some rics, brains, hammers, etc. Nothing too demanding.
Previous Tanks

    10G Shrimp Tank
    20L Planted
    55G Planted
    2G Fluval reef
    72G Bow Planted
    72G Bow FOWLR
    40G Breeder Mixed Reef

Here's the wall in which it will be going.

Started the hole in the wall. Mocked up with my old 20 Long. I have a new one waiting for this project.

Gluing and screwing the stand. Needs a few more bracing. I also need to pick up a GFCI outlet.

Looking good so far. I love in wall tanks as everything is hidden in the back.

Thanks. I'll be painting the whole back side of the wall and stand with Kilz to seal it.

cool project. You usually see big aquariums in the wall, but the location and space you have I think you're on to something throwing that 20 gallon in there.

Looks very nice :0) I'm sure you will enjoy it in your office ;0) A purple firefish would look very nice in there with those you're getting/stated :0) Keep us updated with pics, okay?!

I'm kind of surprised people are interested in this honestly. I thought I'd be laughed at for cutting a hole in my wall for a $20 20 long. I wanted to do something different that I hadn't seen before.

  12. This is all looking great, I too love in-wall setups and looking forward to how this tank turns out.

Honestly its not about the size, just being able to see someone do a build that it done right and noticing that you are paying attention to the little details is all that matters. This is going to be a great office tank.

I like that 'scape a lot. Size of the tank doesn't matter, quality does. I think this is going to look pretty cool.

When I read the title, my first thought was "Wow, thats dumb!" But I was envisioning a 20L in a place like you usually see a large tank, where it is the only feature in the whole wall. Over the desk is a GREAT idea! When your sitting there working, and need to zone out for a bit, its right there at eye level. I love it, and will probably replicate it myself someday /DesktopModules/ActiveForums/themes/_default/emoticons/tongue2.gif

thanks everyone! Had a mishap with plastidip lastnight. I didn't score the edge before removing the tape I had on to protect the inside of the tank while spraying. It pulled a huge chunk off the glass. I tried to blend in a new patch but it never looked right from the front of the tank. I tore off the dip and started to spray paint it black. I forgot to clean the glass prior to paint so I had dozens of blotches where the paint wouldn't take. I'm on my third coat now and most is covered up. I'm wondering how bad it will look when I eventually fill it and get lights going. Oh well I guess, my fault for getting in a hurry. Time to hurry up and wait for the rest of the stuff to arrive.

    Busy day today.

Here's a back of the tank shot. The black needs to be touched up. I plan to just get some black in a can and rolling on another couple coats.

That shows the AC70 that I'll have doing mechanical filtration until I get livestock in there. Then I'll get some chaeto and a lamp to make it a fuge and run carbon as well.

If you see above the tank I am making a shelf for the RODI water tank and salt tank. This will also allow me alternative options to hanging a light instead of having it on the tank itself. I plan to put chains and eye bolts to hold the front of the shelf up before I start using it for water storage. The back is already lagged to the three wall studs. I hope to make a plumbing setup on the shelf where I can just pump rodi water to my salt mixing tub then use gravity to to my water change top off. I will just build a simple removable 1/2" PVC tube with many holes to spread out the rush of water.

Here is a front shot from my office. Don't mind the still wet filler putty. I don't claim to be a wood worker, the miters sucked, but will do the job for now.

I will do some caulking in the inside edges to block as much light leak as I can from the light.

My salt is out for delivery so I'll be filling tonight hopefully. I'm also rinsing the sand a bit in RODI water. I will be removing the MP10 prior to filling and just use my cheap aqeon power head until the dust settles.

I got an email from buildmyled.com that my light will be finshed and shipped by November 4th.

My mixing station idea for above the tank. It should allow easier top offs and water changes.
