I didn't mean that to scare you off of them, just one of those things to watch out for. In that instance, I don't know what happened, he might have overloaded the outlet or something. I know a lot of people use these on aquariums without issue.

Are you trying to have a way to individually control each outlet with a switch, or were you just looking for a power strip?

I don't really have an alternative, but I don't switch stuff on and off much. Standard power strips is what I use, and I just unplug as needed.

I understand someting like that coupld happen with anything, but I'd rather play on the side of caution. I may just put a couple of GFI outlets in the stand and run maybe 2 power strips.

Do you ever plan to use a controller...Neptune Apex, DA Reef Keeper, or other? I didn't think I would at first, so when I built my tank into the wall, I wired a total of 23 duplex outlets (and most of them are switched) above and below the tank. Before long, I bought a Reef Keeper controller and I primarily use the outlets on it. Now I only use a handful of the outlets I originally installed. If I had known that I would ultimately use a controller, I would have laid things out a bit differently. I still would install some outlets but not as many, and I would have put them in better locations. P.S. I also ran a dedicated GFCI protected circuit.

+1 even a ReefKeeper Lite will get you a long way, and they are made for aquarium use, with outlets rated for different amp loads.

I ran 2 x 20amp dedicated circuits in into my fish room. Both on GFCI luckily because Murphey came to visit the other day. I Had been doing some rearranging and left one of my vortech power supplies on the bottom of my stand. My stand is lined with pond liner in the event of water it won't get on the floor. So of coarse the stars aligned and I got water in the stand. Came home to the lights out and hit the reset and instantly tripped again. Then I saw the powersupply. OOOPPPS.

I run the DJ powerstrips, and Apex EB8s. I wouldn't hesitate to run the american DJ strips, just don't overload them. My AIs and some of my vortechs are hooked to mine. Nothing that I would call powerhungry. Don't buy cheap powerstrips though. get something that is rated to handle some good load.

I also run the DJ powerstrips. They go to an outlet where the only thing on that circuit is the fish tanks with a larger sized breaker in the box.

When you say a larger sized breaker, is there also larger sized wire for that circuit?

oh wait I need one of those too?

Yes there is one of those as well, I had the electrician pay special attention to that circuit when he rewired my house.

Oh Chris. Your use of sarcasm never gets old.

I have quite literally seen someone replace a breaker with a larger one on the same wires because it "kept tripping"...

But the other part is that if you say put a 30A breaker and #10 wire to the receptacle, then plug in a power strip rated for 20A, you may have a fire hazard, because you could potentially put more current through the power strip than it was designed for, and the breaker won't protect the power strip. Code mandates that the breaker is sized per the wire connected to it to protect the wire from overheating.

This is the stuff I investigate on my job...comes in handy now and then outside of work too. Just checking.

That's very good to know thanks Bud! I also did not know you did that for a living. Not to derail the thread but wouldn't the internal breaker on the American DJ power strips be a useful backup?
