I bought a plug in GFCI adapter.Q: Can I trust this adapter or should I replace the outlet with a real GFCI
The plug in GFCI adapter is rated for 280 joules of surge protection.
Q: Can I trust this amount of protection to protect my apex energy bar?
Q: If I plug a surge protected power strip rated at +2000 joules, into the GFCI adapter, will I be getting additional protection or does the GFCI/Surge protector combination cancel each other out, or possibly cancel one or the other out?
    Thanks

GFCI's and surge protectors are 2 different things entirety. GFCI's protect you from shock while a surge protector protects your equipment from large power surges that would otherwise damage sensitive electronics. The higher the joules the more protection it will give you. I would replace the outlet with a GFCI outlet properly wired with a ground wire (older homes may not have grounded outlets) and use a surge protector plugged into that. Putting 2 GFCI's in line is not a good idea and can cause both to not function correctly but putting 2 surge protectors in line wouldn't hurt anything.
