My electricity has been out for about 20 min. The entire town is out. How long can my tank go? The girlfriend told me if the temp drops we could warm up some saltwater on the stove which I thought was clever but reminded her the stove is not gas.

Hot water in milk jugs? It's gonna take quite awhile for your tank to cool off to a point where anything will be affected.

I wouldn't worry about it too much until your house starts getting 50-60 degrees.

Water movement and temp is the key! How cold is it in your house?

It just came back on. The temp dropped from 68 to 65 in the house. Appreciate the responses

Glad to hear it is back on. Lack of water movement, from what I was told during the Fall Fest by one of the speakers, is a faster killer than water temps. I was looking at one of the battery backup air pumps that kicks in when power goes out, but those suckers are $80. I have an old computer UPS that still works that I am going to hook up to a powerhead for my tank. I might see how long it lasts with just the powerhead running. If I had a heater in the tank and not in the sump, I would possibly hook that up too, but I think that it will draw too much power to provide an extended amount of protection.

Of course if I was home when the power went out I could move a heater around.

So now that you have learned a lesson.

Go buy a battery operated air pump.

Another option is a cheap power inverter that you can hook onto your vehicle battery & run an extension cord. As long as your car has gas, you have power.

Thanks for the tips, I'm going to figureout a plan today. I actually ran a cord to my 4 runner last night cause it has a built in inverter but it was only a two prong outlet. I did not have one of those adapters and was not sure if it would even work.

I don't advocate doing this but in a bind you could have cut the grounding prong off the extension cord. ONLY USE IT FOR THIS PURPOSE THEY ARE THERE FOR A REASON.
