So I'm not happy with the way my 40 breeder sumpless setup is performing. For anyone out there who doesn't run their tanks with a sump, do you use more than 1 HOB filter/skimmer? I've tried the Aquaclear 110's but they always seem to have a crack in them or leak because of how they were handled during shipping.

Also please don't turn this into a discussion on why you should have a sump, I have one, it's on my other tank and it's amazing; but I don't want to have a sump on my 40.

The biggest issue I have had in a sump less system is the lack of surface skimming. I really like the idea of a hang on fuge/skimmer with a small surface skimming box, but have not had any first hand experience. My concern with that would be micro bubbles. I do think a simple, sumpless system is very feasible with good husbandry. Sometimes we get too caught up in the tech side. KEEP IT SIMPLE STUPID is often good advice that is easy to ignore. I give you props for actually following that advice.

I've done sumpless and had good luck. Kept soft corals like leather, xenias and zoas. Sumps are not a magic cure. You can get a surface skimming attachment for HOB skimmers that help. I don't think you need two on a 40 BR, but I would ditch the AC 110 in favor of a HOB skimmer and a couple powerheads if you don't already have them running. matt1971 ran sumpless on his tanks for quite a while and had amazing looking tanks, so it can be done, just need some TLC.
