I often have trouble matching the API tests to the color charts and I figured out a great way to ensure your zero reading really is zero (I do not think the zero color on the ammonia chart looks like the actual color you get for zero ammonia)
I find that if I run a control test with freshly saltwater from my mixing tank I can ensure my reading is correct by comparing the two
just a tip I thought I would share

Yeah the API SW Ammonia kit sucks but you get used to what zero looks like pretty quick. Nitrate is a lot easier if it's done right (shake #2 for 30s, add, shake vial for 60 sec, wait 5) or just use Sailfert if it's really low. I can tell if I have 0.1 ppm with Salifert.

Fresh salt water doesn't always have zero ammonia I will sometimes get readings of .25 and once I had a bad batch of coral life salt that had 7 ppm ammonia
