So I added a clean up crew to my tank a few weeks ago (25 red hermits, 20 margarita snails-based on the recommendation of the local Salt Water Maintenance person-he's been very nice and helpful). I now see 2 crabs running around in snail shells. I don't know if they killed the snails or took the shells after the snails died, but I'm thinking I better get some extra crab shells. Is there somewhere local that sells them, or do I order them online? Not thinking I want to pay overnight shipping for empty shells, LOL.
    Thanks for the help, Pam

It might help to know where local is?

Sorry, I'm in Dayton. I'm in Des Moines often enough to hit the stores there if they might have them. Thanks, Pam

I have some snail shells that I will give you. I have a limited amount, but let me know how many you need and I'll see what we can do to get them over to you. PM me.

I was just at Adams Aquatics and they have a fish bowl full of hermit crab shells. I needed some too, I almost had a hostile takeover but was fortunate to have broke it up.

Thanks for the tip, and thanks to AJ as well, will send you a PM. I'm pretty sure I saw a crab pulling out a snail, but walked away rather than watch. Nasty little creatures...

Keep an eye on your snails...if they ever lay on the sand for too long upside down they may become a new home for the crabs...

I tried the margarita snails and didn't have any luck. Read somewhere that they prefer cooler waters. They ended up being food for my shrimp. You will have to let me know how they do. My crabs now strut the margarita Sheela. You may not have to worry about spare shells if you have the same results as I did.

I ordered a snail package from reefcleaners, and they'll let you add on empty shells to the free shipping package for less than a dime apiece.
