Hey, This week I've had the strangest heating issue. During the day my temp was getting up to about 86 degrees and at night 81 or so. The crazy thing was that was without the heater on. I woke up Mon. morning to the 86 degrees, freaked out so turned the heater off and haven't had it on since. I was so puzzled as to how the temp could still be so high after the heater had been off. Thought fluctuation of temp was due to warmer temps/sun during the day. Last night finally got it figured out "I think". My daylight fan isn't working so there is no coolin system right now when the daylights are on. For the time being I am keeping it at my evening light setting and am not sure if I should plug the heater in or not. I'f I plug the heater in at 75 degrees that shouldn't raise the temp anymore correct?

One good thing about this is maybe it'll be a good excuse for me to get a canopy that is if we can't get this fixed which we won't have time until Sunday probably to check into it. I've really been wanting one, and really the reason this happened I think is on Sunday during the water change when I leaned the hood up against the wall it slipped and fell a ways(that has happened on several occasions now. I can't seem to get enough light even that way though when cleaning. (hence wondering about the canopy)

Sorry lots of info here and kind of rambled. Just wondering if anyone else has gone through this issue and like I said wondering in the meantime until I can get this fixed should I just keep the tank light set at evening lights and should I go with or without the heater set??? I guess I'm afraid now that I've got it off the daylights and it's cooler what if it drops too fast now. I already think I've lost 2, maybe 3 of my turbo snails this week most likely due to the drastic temp swings , could that be?

Depends on your heater, but it should have a thermostat in it, so unless it is malfuntioning, it should not turn on when your water is that warm. If its a Jager by chance, you have to set the temp for a reference point for the thermostat.

I would hook the heater back up. It shouldn't kick on unless the temp drops down to your set point.

Those fans are usually pretty easy to replace. You can order a computer fan from NewEgg (I like the SilenX brand...really quiet) pop the plastic cover off of the lights, and put the new fan in. Now, when buying computer fans vs. replacement fans from Oceanic, the connectors to the circuit board in the hood may not be the same. In that case, I've used telephone wire connectors (plastic snap style connectors available at Menards) to connect the new fan wires to the original connector. Very easy. Anyway, I hope that helps.

thanks for the feedback on turning back on the heater. I've got the heater plugged back in now and the temp seems to be stabalizing a little. It's at about 81 even though I've got the temp set at 78. Luckily I had a friend lend me a metal halide light that I've hooked on the back middle chamber so I can have lighting in the meantime for my corals. I've got a fan blowing on the tank as well to help with cooling. Of course now I"m falling in love with the look of the open top and the metal halide so I'm probably going to want to look online to see if they sell those individually, I looked quick and saw some on the Oceanic biocube but didn't see if you can buy them ala carte or not. On the other hand maybe we'll just fix the fan or order a new one. we'll see..... thanks again:)
