If you do that you will pretty much want to have it twice a year to help people have enough all year round. For example, I feed this food almost exclusively to my tank and my tank looks amazing. So I want to make sure I have enough of this food to last so my tank continues to look great.

Otherwise we would have to scavenge off other regions when they do their food day and honestly that will be more expensive if you don't travel to help them.

I first posted what I would need on Monday. My count on bags of food was about the same as many of the others you have listed. In the past we have made food together as a group for our tanks.
Learning to do it, sure that is part of it but it also has had a social social aspect, a group activity where we all got together and made food so we could feed our fish quality food at a good price and take care of our livestock as they deserve to be fed. Buying all the ingredients small scale is not cost effective that is one of the reasons why we all did it together. We have been doing this for years and it was not just on an instructional level. I have never bought GIRS food with out being there to help make it. I can go down in my count on what I will need but if we are not planning on doing this for another year to two years then the amount I requested is what I will need. I understand the problem with batch size and if that is what is the problem, then members of GIRS should make food more than once a year. Which means we should plan on two meetings a year for food making. Allowing bags of food only for those that help make it will also help keep the count down.

Didn't mean to start a big debate about it, just saying that keeping at 70-80 bags is still a huge batch. I've taken 10 bags before myself - I'm just saying that when we get to multiple people wanting 15-20 bags or more, that's when it makes the event a bit difficult. I guess maybe it would make sense to require attendance for more than X bags or something...dunno, just thinking out loud. Maybe for this time anything goes...

OH I completely understand where you're coming from @Turbo's Aquatics@Turbo's Aquatics if we start needing to make 100+ bags of food we mind as well start our own LRS company :) If we can only make so much food per batch (say for example 80 bags) then I understand having a limit so one person doesn't end up with 20/80 bags. But at the same time I'm glad that so many people in this region are coming together to want to make and enjoy the club food. :)

I agree it is a big batch and if we need to we can put a cap on everyone's amount. What this conversation shows is that if we want to feed our fish GIRS food we will need to plan on making it more often as a group activity. We make quality food! It is a major benefit for people to be in the club and a great reason for people to join in and participate.

Ive been to almost all of the diy food meetings we've never had someone request more then 10 bags cause honestly if you only have one tank there is no way you should need more.

I can understand the social aspect of the diy food sure its there but I wasn't really talking about that for a social meeting.

If there is a need for it and we limit how many bags a person can get we can plan another meeting for diy food if needed. Its not something I personally want to do because we didnt do it at all last year and I dont want to repeat meetings but sure we can do the same meeting later in the year maybe in the fall

For the @Region: Des Moines & Ames there is a tab above to rsvp please go up and select if your coming or not at the moment it says 6 are coming and it will be tough to make a bunch with only 6..... Every meeting actually if you can rsvp on that tab that would be great so we can get a count of how many will attend thanks

We will see how the year goes I dont want to be forced to do something when we didnt do it at all last year at all and nobody complained. I do want to get through other meeting ideas before I repeat meetings. For this meeting we will make what we have, make sure everyone gets the informational meeting food then if there is extra at the end they can be purchased.

Everyone should understand we didnt do this at all last year, year before that was twice, then year before that I think we did it in buds garage once.... this is an informational meeting which we shouldn't have to cover multiple times a year so people can learn how to do it. Kinda runs in the support you LFS cause if you only depend on the club for cheap food then you aren't buying from your lfs.....

I use different food to feed my fish.... Pellets 7 days a week and frozen 3 days a week

When I first "took over" the meeting from Joe/etc he did mention that is was really "supposed" to be an informational meeting about how to do it yourself. There are ways to make your own in small batches and make it cost effective. I kind of turned it into a huge production and that's OK...I think we actually had one meeting where we made like 120 bags, it turns into a logistical issue when it gets that big.

Anyways, let's not worry about it for this go-around...I think we're beating a dead horse. We'll plan to make enough food so that everyone gets what they want, but if you want more than 8 or 10 bags and we end up coming up short, we'll start taking bags off the top of the largest takers - that's all.

Updated OP: total now in the 60-70 bag range, so we're nearing the upper limit but still should be able to fill all requests

So what are you guys saying? I cannot have 10 bags, or more? As far as other regions, I just think it's a little far for me to travel for food... I've gotten about 10 bags (I think the last time was a 12) for the past several years because of the number of tanks/fish I have and giving food to people as one of the selling points to join GIRS.

No you're on the count on the front page for having 10 bags.

All that was discussed before is that if we get over 70ish bags in total then the logistics become more difficult and the meeting becomes one big production number. We want people to be able to learn about DIY food instead of just showing up and being a sweatshop laborer for a day.
