+1 members only. Good incentive for membership. +1 public forum but members only can post (all can view - this is possible)

Really just about anything you can dream up can be done.

Reef Central is 50 meaningful posts before you can view or use but sell trade section. And be a member for at least 90 days. They did the meaningful post so new people don't jump on and just post nice tank or stuff like that to jack up their post count quicker.

    Absolutly NOT!

    Section 1

The Greater Iowa Reef Society is a non-profit organization of marine hobbyists brought together by the desire to promote a better understanding of the life we keep in our home aquariums. Our focus is increasing the longevity of marine life in a controlled environment and to encourage that life to propagate freely. Only through education and the sharing of ideas can we expect a future for our hobby.

NO WHERE does it mention having a place to buy and sell cheap corals & equipment!

I like the idea of the sanctioned auction. Say quarterly. GIRS hosts the auction at 5-10% of the sale...

I dont really have a position either way but I will say if auctions ever happened that it should be restricted to paid members only [both the seller and the bidders]. That would take care of a lot of the bogus bids but it still leaves the problem of inflating the price intentionally.

My bad i thought sharing of aquacultured corals would have been apart of it also.

Oh well lets just keep everything the same as it is dont want any people getting upset over a change thats incredibly popular on social media to use as a way to bring in new members......

Ill keep promoting girs on the groups that im apart of on Facebook.

That's fine, you wont hear from me again.

    Suggestion though

Just rename the club "Greater Iowa Buy Sell Trade" because that is all we are about anymore.

No kidding. Remember I said keep snark and sarcasm OUT OF IT.

That goes for both of you Donny and especially Craig. Tired of this!

This is a valid topic for discussion!

I for one, still think it would be fun and think it could be done in a fun and benificial way. I look forward to the board reviewing! Happy friday everyone.

That's the thing... there is absolutely nothing wrong with sharing of aquacultured corals and giving club members and fellow hobbyists good deals. It should not be the MAIN FOCUS of this site and the community. For some it seems to be. Then when you throw in the auction aspect- which IMO is a way for the seller to get the most money possible out of their coral- its more blurring the hobbyist/commercial aspect and focusing on the monetary gains that could be had off your fellow hobbyists.
Could an auction system work? sure. Would it open up a whole new problem to deal with? I think there is a high potential it would.

Where did Craig post any kind of sarcasm or snark? He just pointed to the club documents in place that describe the purpose of this club.....

Hi, I'm fairly new here and am considering joining the society. I would like to say that since I've been getting back into the hobby over the last three weeks, I've been coming to these forums every day (at least) to see if any goodies have been posted for sale. This may not be a trading post, but I consider the trading aspect to be a big selling point over ReefCentral or any of the many other boards out there. I think that a members-only auction area would be a useful contribution to the society. Getting people here to post is the big battle. Getting the topics on your desired subject is easier.

I wouldn't be posting here today if I wasn't browsing the trades section before work...

I am curious, what will those that sell on here will do for being granted this privilege? This idea benefits the most those that raise corals to sell. Next it benefits those that are in the market to buy. Most of the time I am not on here to look to buy something. If I wanted to do an auction or buy a coral I have lots of places to do so. I may be wrong but it seems to me that most of those that support an auction place have something to gain from this idea. I would hope that if GIRS is going to turn itself into a market place - auction house that the club will receive a portion of monetary gain from each transaction to support what GIRS fundamentally has always been about and that is to share, learn and enjoy companionship from fellow reefers.

I think that the club taking a fee as either a flat amount or a percentage on an ongoing basis is shaky ground, tax wise. I would not do this. A devoted club event is different, like a dedicated fundraiser.

If that is the case then I feel that Auctions should be allowed only as a dedicated fundraiser event for GIRS.

Well said @AndrewAcropora@AndrewAcropora that is why i joined long ago and many others that have joined.

I would have a huge issue with paying 10% of each auction with some kind of promise that it would get put back in the club somehow with cool things for the regions.... that promise was told to us during 2011 business meeting in regards to macna and it still has yet to happen.

Not all auctions will the seller make a ton of money idk why anyone would think that... most of the time corals sell for well under market value price so the buyer gets hooked up and since most corals are aquacultured the seller makes a little also.

Maybe this could also be a perk of the supporter tag that has been discussed? I think that would be a great idea

It seems that many sites only allow auctions by sponsors, and some have updated policies to exclude them otherwise. So let's not get ahead of ourselves on how to implement when there hasn't really been a consensus on if.
