So reading through all of these points being made in this thread I'm gathering that people who are "against" the idea of auctions are so simply because of the focus they put on the BST aspect of the site, and that we don't want to turn the site into a trading forum. That's completely understandable but if it creates more more traffic on the site and more memberships (more money for the club) then isn't it a positive situation? The increase in both of those should lead to more posts in other areas of the site.

This is all part of change and growth like @Armydog@Armydog had mentioned. And just like how the conversation got started not to long ago about doing some possible photo contests. Yet another great way to bring our saltwater community together and get more people/action going on the site.

Not the same plus we already have that (club buy sell trade and regular buy sell trade) so that hasnt ever worked to bring in new members cause they can see we have that forum....

@Drewster@Drewster i suggested that we bring the photo contests back but nothing ever happened

Which yes you are correct another way to bring in new members! Both ideas should be implemented in the club

Well, I can not think of anything additional to add to this topic other than what I have already suggested, unless some new information or ideas become available. I want to see the club do well and to see it have more members that get involved and help with activities and participate in running GIRS. I really appreciate everyone's effort in making this club work, it has been a valuable asset to me in keeping a reef and in feeling a part of the reefing community in Iowa. Please consider my thoughts and suggestions and also keep in mind that I have no personal monetary purpose behind my thoughts. My only goal is to see the site be a welcome environment for reefers to come together as friends for the betterment and sustainability of the hobby.

I'm thinking you better check with other major forums as to why they do t allow in sanctioned auctions.

I have a feeling there is going to be issues with people pist off. Either the product isn't as displayed by the image (photo shop). Or the seller refuses to deliver because of lack of interest (didn't bid for a reasonable value).

As the board members have said before. You are volunteers listening to squabbles on donated time every time someone creates a problem. Be prepared for problems. Learn from other forums lessons learned and investigate this one.

The photo contest is a great idea. I don't think anyone disagreed with that when it was mentioned. Really the only thing that has to happen there is someone to step up and say this is what I would like to do. The organizer can request financing/prizes from the BOD and we will approve it. If you're waiting for someone from the BOD to handle running a photo contest you're going to be waiting awhile. There isn't a switch we can turn on that automatically starts a photo contest.
If you want to handle the photo contest you have approval. Just let us know what you want to make it happen.

There have been countless good suggestions on things to try to get some activity going over the years. The BOD has approved several. What's always lacking is someone to step up and make it happen, or someone that actually follows through on the ideas.

I will write something up for a photo contest and hold one soon. Help from the Bod and from others saying they want good posts will be encouraged to participate to get the ball rolling and bring attention to the contest

  7. As I read through this post its the hottest thing since sliced bread. I really struggle with the idea of a certain number of posts. I read nearly everything that is posted but only post on occasion. As far as the other requirements its a great starting point and keeps the focus on the real intent to increase members in the GIRS.

On a side note have we ever contacted the LFS in the various areas across the state and created like a tri-fold pamphlet to pick up or hand out to customers to show and highlight the benefits of joining GIRS?

As things move forward with it we can figure out possible ways to improve on it. If you need something specific from the BOD just ask.
That particular type of thing we would love to see happen and get some activity going. It's just got to have someone taking charge and making it work.
There seems to be fewer and fewer people that are actually willing to step up and dedicate the time and effort into those types of things that make this club better. Look at the lack of interest in elected positions. Look at the state of half our regions. We have basically nothing happening in the Cedar rapids or Waterloo area. No trustees and no one seemingly interested in the position. Like QC last year. We just need that certain type of people @Ray/Jen_Reefin@Ray/Jen_Reefin to step up and things can come around quickly for the region and in turn grow the club. They're doing great. You've been doing great keeping action going in Des Moines. Find a dozen more members that would do the same thing this club would be entirely different for the better.

We have one. Some stores will distribute it others won't. That's another good idea, but again it takes someone to handle it and keep it out there. Thats where we Fall short.

There is a forum that does auctions. Reef2Reef. The ones doing the auctions are sponsors. Online coral vendors that pay sponsorship fees. They made a new section for sponsor auctions.
The post wysiwyg corals or frag packs. Then set minimum bid and bid increments. Then set date and time for bids to end. And the ship the winner their coral. If you don't follow through by paying or shipping you are banned.

R2R auctions seem to be pretty straightforward.
Seems like it would be a great addition to GIRS.
    But I'm no expert

That's sponsors only. Auctions are restricted in the b/s/t section.

    That's a good point.
Maybe all sellers should be sponsors? Cause let's cut the bull it's all about the $in the end.

Some of the rules could be modified to better suit our club. It doesn't have to be just sponsers.

As a side note this thread now probably accounts for half of the posts on the entire forum this month. Now if we can get some similar passionate interest in reefing as we apparently have in capitalism and its expansion or regulation.

I like the idea myself. Also love the photo contest. I think anything that would increase traffic on the sight would be positive.

Nothing like controversy / change to blow up the site. Didn't know there were so many people on here. Hundreds of views and comments. I joined to get good info, get some awesome frags that blow away the lfs's, and to attend the meetings and frag fests. Not sure if I would do auctions. Whoever has the bigger checkbook usually wins. Or the person that can sit at the computer and bid at the last second. I am always watching the forums for sales though. Lots of people getting in and out of the hobby.
Photo contests are cool, maybe a tank of the month if anyone has time to write it up.

I'm going to forward this thought. Why would anyone that's not a sponsor (for profit) need to auction off coral anyways? If a hobbiest needs to sell frags why no list with price shown? Whats the benefit of the auction? Whats in it for the seller? How could the buyer benefit? No where has anyone answered this.

Why is auctioning off a price of coral so much more beneficial than barter?
"We've answered that. You never know what the end price will be. Some gain some loose.". Okay. Why set yourself up for a short sell? The real root of it: the seller is gambling. Taking a risk that their monetary gain could boast high, at the risk of possible loss. Which there is no real loss. We're hobbiests, the price of growing the coral is a cost of the hobby. The guy with a tax ID then, it is an expense.

Stating again: Why, other than the gamble of it, is there a benefit to hobbiests auctioning coral, rather than bartering?

Because its fun @abower@abower its a change from the norm, its popular, ect ect. The bst on here has been dead this is a fun way to get people interested/more involved.

But like the dbtc not everyone has to be involved.

So if it does go through dont post on it if you dont want to
