Anyone here have a ferret? Back in Cali they were illegal, so they were hard to find. Thinking of getting one of these guys. Any suggestions? Would like one that is quite young as I know they can tend to be quite nasty of not properly socialized early on. Also want to get him used to my dogs. Of course it would be altered and descented.

I've had about 7 ferrets over the last 15 years but last my last one a year or so ago. The are great pets if you have the time and can put up with the smell. Even descented will smell since they only remove two of the four scent glands i think. I would stay away from the petco ferrets since they are marshall ferrets and breed for animal testing and have alot of problems. I would also suggested getting more than one so they can entertain each other and its alot more fun to watch. I had two one time that was free to run. But do not think you will ever be able to fully litter train them, they will only use a box 80-90 percent of the time if you lucky. They will get along great with other animals and will need to be handled daily for large amount of time. Ferret proofing is also a challenge since they can get into anywhere they can get its head though. I would love to have more someday but dont have the time to give and to clean the cage which you have to do 2-3 times a week. I almost wanted to start a rescue one time about ten years ago but then had a kid instead. Anything else i can help you with let me know. If you decide you give one a home it will be a great pet, also thought of them as a cross between a dog and a kitten.
