So I came home today and one of my firefish was dead and the other one is in hiding (I hope). I can't seem to find a reason for why he died as I've had him for almost a year and there haven't really been any recent changes to the tank. Sometimes I guess fish just turn up dead? All my params are where they should be. Just confuzzled. /DesktopModules/ActiveForums/themes/_default/emoticons/confused.gif

Watch the rest close, but like you said sometimes they do just die.

How long have you had 2? They usually don't play well with each other.

They were together for all the same time and were added together. It was a large enough tank that they didn't bother each other either.

Sorry to hear.. I recently had a perfectly healthy anthias die out of the blue too. Did you move some rocks around/have an avalanch that might have crushed it?

@Lee, I've had that with a six line when i tried catching a crab but nothing's been moved in this one for awhile. As above, I think it was it's time? But I'll keep watching.

Firefish will tend to dwindle down to a single fish unless you have a mated male/female pair. Regardless of when they were added (together or not) and the size of the tank. Ok, in a massive (400+ gallon or something) tank they would probably be ok, but as they mature, they can develop aggression towards their species. People think that they are peaceful since they interact well with other fish in the tank. Not saying you did something that you should have not done. I did the same thing many years ago. I had 2 tanks, and both had 2 firefish that both went down to 1 after a while for no clear reason. That is when I learned about their male/female MATED pair requirement.

Or like you said, it could have been just some natural thing. Just keep an eye on all of your fish for a while to make sure that it isn't a disease or something toxic in the water.

Chin up, and keep moving forward.

I have had 4 firefish for going on 5 months now with no problems. They all school up and swim around together. They never try and attack each other or any other fish in the aquarium. I even added them at differnt times. Started with 1 and added 3 more. They seem to be very peaceful fish.

Nick I would generally agree that there was some aggression but when we moved them to a bigger tank that went away as they each had their own side. They were never buddy buddy that Zoobie's are (Jealous of that btw).

I think and at least this is the working theory, one of the jars of food from reefcleaners didn't have a seal and I was just informed today that that was the jar that was getting fed to the fish. So food poisoning? I imagine a week or so of feeding "bad" food is enough to hurt/kill some fish. I still haven't seen the other firefish, and the peaceful little six line is breathing heavy and having problems swimming. So definitely not a one fish isolation event anymore.
