I've had my flame hawk for a couple years and loved the fish minus not being able to have any shrimp in the tank. Anyways, I added a flame angel last week, and so far it's been a model citizen except that she took over the hawk's home/cave. The hawk had been out more a lot lately trying to figure out where to set up shop. Normally he only came out when I got near the tank because he thought he was getting fed. Anyways, today I came home and he was dead on the floor. I should've had the tank covered but none of the fish have ever tried to jump. My fault but pretty bummed right now. You can guarantee the mesh cover won't be coming off anymore.

Wow. Bummer. Sorry for losing him.

Years ago when I had a 75 gallon, I watched my cleaner wrasse find the gap between the tank and the glass tops, and angled his trajectory to make it out and miss my canopy to end up on the floor behind the tank. He was rescued though. I went back and added more of that plastic trim that attaches to the back of the glass, and cut it really close around any plumbing (wasn't a reef ready tank).

With my current 120 with no canopy (and no glass top), I made the clear mess "frames" to cover 100% of both sides. I don't have a wrasse any more, but every not and then, you can hear one of the fish getting a little airborne and splashing back into the tank.

Always sucks to loose a fish. Especially the ones with cool personalities. Keep that top on and keep those guys safe.

My flame hawk never jumps but my longnose hawk likes to flop around on the surface occassionally for fun it seems. I have a 1/4 inch clear mesh now on my tank after my diamond goby turned into floor jerky.

Thanks for the advice and stories everyone! I modified my mesh net top to fit better, and it will for sure always be on the tank. My flame hawk never tried to jump before, but I think with the flame angel invading his space, he was getting stressed out.
