What does everyone use to make their frag stations? I am planning on putting acans on em to grow out and cover it. I have close to a dozen different acans in route and was wanting to get some made. Just wondering what everyone uses.

what do you mean by frag stations? i just attach what i want where i want /DesktopModules/ActiveForums/themes/_default/emoticons/smile.gif i'd just get a rock out of the tank or sump thats big enough to allow for alot of growth and attach the plugs to the rock. you want to make sure you mount it so it grows out to the rock first not under the plug. otherwise it seems they don't grow out to well.

if you are talking like the egg crates, you can get those at menards in the paint department. they come in a 2x4 section for about 11 bucks.

I think Nick is talking about something like this:

Nick, I've heard of people doing this with zoas and other much faster growing corals, but not acans..just because they grow so slow.

Thanks AJ you hit the nail on the head. I am wanting to use this item as it will be easy to frag when it is ready. Plus I would put 2-3 different types per rock. Making a very pretty rock and givving me my bed of acans Ive always wanted.

The general use case for an item like this is allow your zoas/palys to grow onto the rock, then you can replace the frag plug with a new one and allow the softies on the rock to cover the new frag plug. With acans, they grow out that hard skeletal structure that would prevent that type of adding/removing of frag plugs. If I were in your shoes, I would just find a nice rock and glue your acans to that and allow them to grow out. The frag stations are fairly expensive and you really wouldn't be using it for its intended purpose. Know what I mean?

I think acans look better on the bottom of the sandbed or bottom glass than they do on rocks. I would just use frag discs so they lay flat on the bottom. Just my opinion...

Those frag stations are 100% ceramic and solid. Cutting into it won't be as easy as you think unless you have a band saw for cutting corals.

I use slate rock or flat lace rock. I haven't seen any problems with nutrient levels in my tank when I add new rock either.

Thanks slovan, I was actually wondering if it would be easy to cut. And also for what they were made out of. I think I will do a little more research as far the ingrediants and maybe try to make it poris so it will cut easier.

why not do what AJ did and drill a piece of rock with a masonry bit the size of a frag plug?

I want the acans to grow out on a rock on the sandbed. Once they started growing to rock i would pull the plug out and eventually have a awesome rock covered in acans. I also dont want (when their to boring anymore) to have hard time fragging out that rock.
