IMO - Non members pay to get in unless under 18. Yes you might have to pay to the the wife/hubby in, don't expect for them to pay if they are not interested, and you might have 15 bucks less to spend. I don't think a membership should allow member + 1 admission. Why complicate it? If that 15 bucks is a factor that makes you not go then realistically you were not going to buy much, and since when has 15 bucks been too much for reef tank enthusiasts? I think it costs me 15 bucks just to look at my tank!

Now if there was a family membership sold that would be different, but with all the money spent on our hobby I don't see the problem with giving the club some funds. I wonder how much UPS and fedex have gotten from me...

Not to be a dick but right or wrong the final decision is up to the board and the current board has decided that spouses do not get in free. if you do not agree with this then run for the board and change it

Im not saying I agree or disagree and I think that the guys that run it do a great job. But bottom line in order for me to have a better time she has to be happy too. Believe my wife is a tight *** when it comes to money. And Im sure there are other guys in the club that can agree. Some guys giving imput prob arent married and wouldnt know this.

Also by trying to encourage our wives and family members mean more money for the club and local stores? If I eventually got my wife involved that would mean spending more money.

if the constitution says there is a $30 family plan then why are current members being charged 100% to get there spouses involved. it sounds like it should be 50% $10 for your spouse to attend. it almost seems the club is ripping off its members for familys to get involved. you cant change the constitution at your own free will & make up your own rules as you go. kids shouldnt be free either. kids come from familys. you cant go to the movies, dinner, ect... without paying for everybody. nobody should get in free then! adults or kids.

This is a constitution that was written in the late 90's. There has NEVER (ok maybe one a dozen years ago) been anyone who took advantage of it. It was $35 a year.

At some point in time is was changed by a bod/members long long ago to make things much simpler.

This will be the first time EVER that members are allowed in free, I cant believe there is this much complaining about it. Next time, we should make it easy. $15 a person, member or non member, kid or not, then no one can ***** about it.

Does anyone realize that these events are not free to put on? Do you think the hotel graciously donates the space to us, or the speakers pay their own flights to get here?

i wasnt trying to start a war about this but it happened. i just asked a simple yes/no question. we all know these events are not free to put together, but you also CAN NOT change the constitution or by laws at free will & place whatever rules sound good. there definetly needs to be a change in the constitution/by laws. sorry for the hassle of this thread but it is what it is.

it doesnt matter when it was written. that was then & this now. the club is starting to sound more like a business that wants to make money vs trying to get people to truely enjoy the hobby. cant wait to see what happens in the future with this.

The thoughts are good, but that is why we have an annual business meeting for ALL members to attend and work out issues like this, not the day before the fest. The BOD are all volunteers doing the best they can for the good of the club

The club will be doing good to break even. It's certainly not about making money. I think the goal is to a) keep the club from totally losing it's shirt and b) make it fair for everyone involved.

I agree that it's really too late to be worrying about this at all right now. It is what it is.

A great topic for this year's business meeting.

Not sure we should continue this unless there is a point. Every one has had there say and thats it. Great Little discussion, but lets stop beating a dead horse ok. Members get in free and kids. Thats it and hope like hell we can talk /discuss reef related thing with this much passion. Seem like when everyone voices something.
Lets move on. Cant wait to get over there tonight and help get this fest going. See everyone there.

Again, who is saying that it wasnt changed legally & correctly? This was many many years ago when there was only 30 or so members.

And if the BOD is worried about making money, why would they let all members in free?

The real interesting part will be to see how many people are actually at the business meeting this year! I know I usually am. I challenge anyone who has a vested interest in the club and how it is run to show up.

It is amazing that we have 250+ members, but only 15-20 usually show up for the business meeting where discussions like this take place.

Well alot of the legally comments on this topic are coming from people that have hardly ever posted on here. As for the meetings Im really not close to any of the regions and am swamped between work, coaching high school basketball and a 1 year old.

Not trying to be a dick, but it doesn't appear from your profile that you are even a paying GIRS member, so you would have to pay to get into the fest anyway. 1 non-member entrance fee would never entile a non-members wife to get in for free.
