It can be done. Here is a BRS Video that discusses it: http://www.bulkreefsupply.com/video/view/brs-carbon-and-gfo-reactors/

I bought the BRS reactor and am running both carbon and gfo. Seems to be working fine. I do not have a whole lot of run time, but I am happy so far.

+1 the video is very helpful. Make sure if you run both you don't tumble them because the GFO will crush the carbon into fine powder.

I have the 4" reef octopus reactor . I don't allow the carbon to tumble in it now either. I'm running bio pellets also and my line of thinking is it can't hurt to have a second line of defense against phosphates

One more thing...be sure to introduce GFO gradually; you don't want to shock the system by reducing PO4 too fast. I run C and GFO in seperate reactor chambers on one tank, combined mixture in one reactor on another tank and combined mix in media bags in another tank. My experience has been that it seems equally effective with any of these methods.

What size of carbon are you running in the one you mix?

I used both gfo and carbon in mine. Like they said don't over do too much too fast.

I use the BRS Premium ROX 0.8 Aquarium Carbon and I really like it. I started using the BRS High Capacity GFO when they stopped carrying the GFO pellets. It's too bad because I liked the pellets better. My opinion is that the high capacity GFO doesn't tumble very well, at least not for extended periods of time, and it clogs the sponges and carbon in my dual reactor. It works OK when mixed with carbon and put in a single reactor or in very fine media bags. I had very few problems with the pellets no matter how I used them. I wish I could switch back.

Have you ever run the standard GFO ?? I'm leaning toward just adding another reef octopus reactor any thoughts about that type of reactor

No, I haven't used the standard GFO. I do plan to try it when I run out of the high capacity, but that will be a while...the high capacity is very efficient. And since its price rivals that of gold /DesktopModules/ActiveForums/themes/_default//emoticons/wink.gif I plan to use every last spec!

I have the standard BRS dual GFO & Carbon reactor, so I can't speak for the Reef Octopus (other than their products seem to have a good reputation).
