Do we have anyone in Des Moines who still drills glass holes? I'm considering getting a hole or two drilled to make an overflow instead of using an overflow box (for lack of room).

    Details below:

I have a situation where their is only a 6" difference between the top of the stand and the top of the sump. And my overflow box is 10" deep and too big. Or would an overflow drain have enough pressure behind it to push water up a pipe 4" before draining back into the sump? I thought this could be easily simplified with a hole, or two, some bulkheads and PVC pipe.

An overflow drain from my own testing when building mine and from researching it can not go up at any point or it will cause an annoying flushing effect that will have other own long term problems. The pipe will fill until it has enough water and then empty into the sump instead of it being a constant flow. You will want to run the pipe always at a downward angle, even if that means you have to add more horizontal length to accomplish that.

Yep water needs to free flow down to sump or you will get siphon and a tolit flushing sound every few seconds.
You could in theroy use a tee and a vent where the water has to rise the 4" to vent it and prevent the flushing sound but depending on your setup it may cause other issues as well.

Yea sounds like too much work. I think it'll be easier to change design plans

If you buy the bit I can come drill it. Or ask Matt (ninjax77) to borrow his bit.

In Blogs, check out the Glass Drilling demo from last March Cedar Valley Event. It was at AC&C in Washburn. Here is the link to the download:

You can get the drills at home improvement stores like Menards, etc. I was told by a couple of people they don't drill a hole in the bottom of a 10 gallon tank because the glass cracks in those too easy so I got a drill and drilled 6 holes in the bottom of an old 10 gallon tank without a problem.
