Heater is not turning off

Could be time to buy a new heater. The built-in thermostat is no longer functioning properly and if not addressed you could end up with a much bigger problem on your hand.

 

Sorry to hijack this thread, but reading it just reminded me of a question I had. Do you all think a 200w finnex titanium heater is good enough for a 75 gallon with about a 20 gallon sump? With displacement from sand and rock its around 80 gallons of actual water volume. I'd like to avoid using two heaters due to plug space but am wondering if in the winter it will have trouble staying consistent. It depends. How much heat are you getting from pumps, lights etc. I think it is sufficient but could vary depending upon your situation. For example, we dont even have a heater on our 280 (340 total gallons) because the external pump has enough heat transfer to keep it at 79-80 during the winter. On our 210 (220 total gallon) we have a 500 watt heater and it does run during the winter but easily keeps up. We have led lights on both tanks so not much heat gain there.

 

Thanks for the info. I guess the best way is for me to monitor it and check the graph readings every week to see how much it fluxuates. So far it is only going up or down by 0.4F. If it gets worse this winter I'll either find a way for a 2nd heater or get a 300W. Tank is in my basement which is consistently 66-70 degrees in either season. So hopefully that is stable enough that it can keep up.

 

One of my heaters is set at 71 to heat the tank at 78. Another is 74 to heat at 78. No consistency...
