Hello. I found this website when reading my tfh magazine. I never really thought much of it since I used to only do fresh water stuff but now that I went to the darkside and set up my first salt tank I figured I would join. Why not, it's in Iowa haha. Umm, a little about me. My name is Jim, I am 24 years of age, have kept fish for a few years, bred many, member of a few fish clubs around the Iowa area. I got tired of fresh water, I still have 4 tanks that are fresh but I decided to turn my 55g into a fowlr, I know this is a reef forum but I want to start slow, I plan to have a nice reef one day. I joined because I really want to learn without being chastised like a few other forums like to do. I am a noob at this and have noob questions even though I read up allot so bear with me haha.
I have one main question and I have no idea where to put it so might as well put it in my introductory . I have had my 55 set up for approximately a month  now. I only have 20 lbs of live rock for now (it gets expensive) but I plan to have about 60 lbs total over time. I am picking up my skimmer tomorrow. (it will be a hob since I do not have a sump, nor have the stand for a sump) In my tank I have a purple dottyback, 2 blue/green chromis, 2 blue legged hermits, a nassarius snail, 1 turbo snail, and a goby/pistol shrimp combo. Everything has been doing amazing, eating very well and very active. But the past few days I have had a crazy algae bloom and I honestly do not know what to do with it. I was wondering if I should add a hob filter with a filter pad to help sift out some debris in the water or what. Just some quick advice would be amazing /DesktopModules/ActiveForums/themes/_default/emoticons/smile.gif. Thank you ahead of time for even looking at my post.
Here is a shoddy picture of my tank in progress.

Forgot to add that my 2 hob filters contain rubble of live rock.

    First, let me say welcome!

As far as the algae, it looks like it could be diatoms. How long was the tank up and running? Did you cycle it before? Have you checked the water parameters? My guess is your tank is finishing its cycle and the bloom is a result of this. I am sure someone with more experience can tell you for sure though. /DesktopModules/ActiveForums/themes/_default//emoticons/smile.gif

    Welcome! A couple of questions...

Did you let the tank cycle with the rock at all first? Or did you jump straight into things? The algae bloom is a normal part of cycling any saltwater system.. but I would have expected it to occur sooner than 1 month.

If you didn't cycle first and already have livestock in there with no skimmer you may want to start testing your ammonia, nitrite and nitrate levels.

Welcome as well. I would agree this looks like a diatom bloom. What are you using for water? RO/DI? What is the substrate, crushed coral, sand, etc? If it is sand the silicates from it will cause this as well. There could be many cuases for this and hard to diagnose since the tank is so young. I would add about 2 dozen turbo snails to help eat.

Thanks all for the warm welcome.

    Substrate is aragonite.
I cycled it for a week with the bottle of instant cycle stuff (forgot the name, it's in a purple bottle though) then I added in my 2 chromis
Tank has been up for approx 3.5 weeks.

I have been asking around to a few local stores as well and they just suggest more turbo snails so I guess that is what I will be picking up this weekend.

p.s. I just picked up a protein skimmer so that is out of the way.
