Ok, so I'm finally giving in and seriously decided to get a better skimmer.

Not sure if it will help but I'm getting tired of scrubbing my tanks clean every other day.

So I've been looking all around and I keep going back and fourth between skimz, reef octopus, and vertex.

For the price of the 500 gallon vertex I can get a 1500 gallon reef creations.

Almost just got a reef octopus though.

I'm just not sure what to do.

I'd really like to get one of the crazy 3000 dollar ones but nowhere in the budget would allow that.

Should I spend the extra cash for the vertex or just get something that's equivalent but cheaper?

    Ps: skimmer must be external.

I've had good luck with my reef octopus. I have the SRO 5000 int and it works great.

It doesn't look like vertex makes an external...yet.
I don't think you would be disappointed with a skimmer from either of the other two. Which one can you get a better "bang for your buck" ?

    Thanks for all your advice.

So, I'm still doing research and what in leaning torwards is SRO/5000EXT, Regal 300EXT, or Skimz Monzter SM302.

    I don't get why but I can't find a 6000 version of the SRO.

That would be more equivalent to the Regal.

I guess im even contemplating something like the My Reef Creations MR-7.

Not really sure how good it is though.

Anyways, I thought I'd shoot over here for a sec to see what your ideas were then back to research a lil bit more before making a decision.

Better blow this cash quick before I change my mind.

The reason I only have 150 gallon skimmer on my 700 gallon system is cause I'm normally cheap as hell.

I only get the good stuff when I have these moments when I just don't care. I randomly buy a bunch of **** without thinking. The longer I think about something the more likely I'll change my mind and revert back to my cheap *** self.
But right now it's best for me to ride this storm and just keep clicking these buy it now buttons and see what happens when the dust settles. Lol

Also, do you guys think me going from 150 gallon skimmer to something bigger is going to have any noticeable difference?

I've always felt that if the 150 gallon one pulls a lot out and kind of slows down to a steady pace it's not going to collect any more than a bigger one which just gets to that point faster.

Don't really know how skimmers work in finer detail beyond that they bubble the water and catch the gunk.

Just make sure you are really comparing apples to apples. For example vertex under rates their skimmers while most other brands drastically over rate the capacity. It's not bad, just confusing. I generally tell people to totally ignore the ratings and look at air flow, neck size, height, and water flow.

There are other factors, but with well respected brands those (air flow especially) are good specs for comparison. Unless you get into less used styles of skimmers that aren't as popular right now.

    Here's a few for you.
Super Reef Octopus SRO-6000EXT 12” External Protein Skimmer - Bulk Reef Supply

Not sure how much your looking to spend or if your gonna add on to your system but those should work. I run a SRO5000 IN Skimmer on a roughly 200 gallon heavy stocked all Sps tank. I went a little overboard on size but when I upgrade I already have my skimmer. And it pulls some nasty **** out. When I dump the cup which is in the basement everyone upstairs smells it lol. And I don't carbon dose anymore lol.

I really liked my reef octopus skimmer that I had. Until I had to buy a impeller for it. I had to pay nearly 120 for it . 98 for impeller 18 for shipping. No other options other than buy the whole pump for 169 and shipping . I bought an extra impeller for My Wayeline DC pumps I have it was 29.99

Yes I have always been a big fan of reef octopus.

You can always try to add two medium sized ones as well. I have done that in the past.

How much water volume are we talking?

Well right now I'm running upwards of 665 gallons. I figure when I switch to the new building here in a few months whatever skimmer get will switch over and go in the new display tank which will be 420 gallon plus 125ish gallon sump.

Anything will be better than my Coralife 150 gallon skimmer lol.

From water testing appears the youtube video show Skimz slightly out performing the Reef Octo for similar pricing. I personal have a RO 220 INT original in sump cone on my 225. I have no complaints and picked mine up used for $160. For Vertex they are great skimmers from what I have seen. Not sure the dollar tag add anything more than look and a name?
