Its bad enough they weigh a ton, Always empty. When I move my tank I removed all the rock then the livestock. Used buckets to hold the rock & sand, keep both wet and temps 60 to 85 should be fine. Put all the fish in a tub w/ some rock, powerheads, & heater. Worked great, no losses. Provide oxygen exchange in buckets for rock and sand, if you don't you could get a buildup of a raunchy rotten egg smell

How far are you moving? If you're moving everything in one day, the tank should be the last thing torn down and the first thing set up. Load up buckets and tubs as said. Try to prepare for any issues that may come about from the move ahead of time. Have plenty of extra water on hand for water changes after you get everything set back up. Closely monitor the basic ammonia, nitrate, nitrite parameters and make sure you're not getting any spike caused by the move.

I'm just moving from Indianola up to grandview, so nor far.
I read that it's a good idea to replace the sand?

When I moved my tank I flushed the sand out until the water was a decent clarity... Very nasty how bad it builds up and I siphon through the sand every 6 weeks or so. My perspective is aragonite is aragonite whether new or cleaned. I have not read a life span on the stuff such as carbon. I think it can dissolve if the pH doesn't stay high enough though which could make its gradation reduce.
