Hello all! I wanna inject ozone into my skimmer box! This will greatly reduce the ammount of carbon that I will use and increase the skimmers performance! My question is, do you drill a hole in the top of the skimmer box and inject it dirrectly via John Guest valve? Or will there have to be a air-stone in the skimmer box? If so how does that work? I also want to drip my effluent from my Ca reactor dirrectly into the skimmer box. I have read that the effluent comes out of the reactor at 6-6.5 ph, and that by dripping into your skimmer helps to raise the ph of the effluent before it hits the sump. Is this necassary and does this seem logical? I am currently running a E.T.S.S. 600 with a mdqx?4 Little Giant pump. Ran all external, this means it cant leak! Any help will help a ton. I havnt purchased anything yet and will not until we all chat the subject. Thanks....
    Dave

Are you just trying to crash your tank Dave? That is fire you are thinking of playing with from what I have heard.

I was talking to Calfo about this when he was here and was saying that it really does help improve your water quality. He also said to invest in the good equipment, not the hobby grade stuff. It's a few hundred more, but worth it in the long run. Also, your guage that measures your ORP is just as important as the Ozone machine itself. I would pop him an e-mail (or post a question on a forum where he regularly responds) and get his feedback. I'm sure he can answer your questions.

Also, he challenged me to find one large aquarium (i.e. Shedd, Atlanta, etc) that didn't use ozone. I haven't looked, but he was *very* confident that they all did. His recommendation is to follow in the footprints of those that are successful.

Thanks AJ! I was reeding Calfos forum on Marine depot, Its worth a look! My question is injection point? I was thinking of drilling the top of my skimmer and running a hard tube airline straight through to the base(about 1/2 inch from bottom). Will this mess up the foam production. Also a lid is cheap! LOL! One more thought, will the ozone destroy my nice acrylic skimmer?

I got the impression that it didn't have an impact on acrylic, but it did on PVC. We were speaking about my ASM G-5 and that's made of PVC. He warned against injecting ozone into that as it would break it down. Instead, he recommended adding a second skimmer, specifically mentioning an AquaC Urchin as a good candidate for ozone injection. Now these were specific to my config and would probably be different for yours. I would pop him an e-mail.

It wasn't an e-mail. It was a discussion we were having over dinner.

I would put it before the mixing point (becket) so that the co2, and ozone can be mixed with the water.

so you think a T fitting inline of the main skimmer pump and inject ozone at that point?

I would be interested to know who in the club currently runs ozone, what devices are used and what kind of differences they have seen.

I have not heard of anyone running it. I went down to Allen Maybee (CoralFreak) a few times. We talked about ozone as he had run it in the past. He said the risk to benefit ratio was not worth it. What he told me was if something gets off just a little bit it can crash the tank hard. He is was one the most knowledgeable reefers I know so I just took his work for it and moved on.

JJ ran ozone in his tank.  I believe it was an Ozotech.

Aj, You were talking about injecting the o3 into an aquac urchin. How would that be accomplished. I have an aquac remora and am planning on using ozone. I was thinking about doing just as billbigsbe mentioned, putting a T fitting on the input side of the skimmer.

Honestly, I have no idea. Anthony was saying to do it, I didn't ask specifically how it could be done. I'm still trying to get my bearings on the whole ozone thing myself and wasn't able to ask intelligent questions on the topic. Sorry I can't provide more info. There' a lot of really bright people on this forum...I'm sure someone knows.

Are you mocking me?!  LOL  haha..
Check this article out.  Maybe it will be helpful.  http://reefkeeping.com/issues/2006-04/rhf/index.php#11  It talks a little about using skimmers as ozone reaction chambers and commercial ozone reactors.
