Yes I have to clean them.
That looks like cyano, which seems odd for the top of a powerhead. Usually it pops up in places with low flow.

There's green algae (that I've been told is good) on there and a couple weeks ago, that red part popped up.

I had a problem with something similar looking a year or so ago and bought that stuff.

It seemed to get rid of it...but now this popped up.

Should I take the power head out and clean it completely out?

That's what I do. If there is a lot of coralliine algae on it i'll soak it in vinegar to remove that.

I do the same. Soak in vinegar, scrub and good to go.

  5. Any tricks to getting these guys to attach to a rock?

I bought it as a "random frag" at Petco a week ago and I can't get him to attach to anything. I also don't even know what type of coral it is.

Most people use regular super glue. If its a soft coral that slimes up and won't let the glue stick you can try a rubberband or similar, just don't go too tight so it cuts into the coral.

  7. I'm gonna have to buy some tomorrow and try to attach him.

I know it's not a great pic and you can't see the tiny things swimming around in there, but about 2-3 weeks ago the stuff on the bottom of the salinity tester popped up out of nowhere and now there are a bunch (20 or so) little fish in there.

I have a mating pair of Clowns that I've seen lay eggs and I know that's not at all what they look like and the only other fish in the tank is a single blue damsel.

A few days before the thing popped up in the tester, my large hermit crab (he's huge) dug himself into the corner of the tank for a few days, too.

I read on what happens when a hermit lays eggs and it says they release them and the just float at the top and then become like tadpoles before becoming crabs...

Anybody have any idea what they are?

  9. Are you getting your water from a Culligan filter at a store?? When I first got started, I bought mine from the self-serve filter and I tested it when I got home....TDS and ammmonia were both high indicating that they aren't maintaining filters. If your adding ammonia with new water and your water changes, Frogspawn aren't going to like that.

Is that just the booster pump? If you're using a joke drinking water Culligan RO system, this could be the problem. You really should use a dedicated RO system with DI resin - and no pressure tank.

    Here's what I bought.

Also I had something strange happen last night.

We bought a torch from Mike in CR (pets playhouse) and he seems to be doing very well and we arched him to an old piece of Coraline covered coral. This rock was deep purple when we went to bed...I woke up and went to check to make sure the torch was doing fine and immediately noticed the CA has turned color to a really cool peach color.

    Has anyone seen this before?

  14. In the center of this pic (to the left of the white hammer skeleton) is that exact rock a couple weeks ago.

    Deep purple.

It was that exact same color till this morning.

How did you attach the torch to the rock?

  16. image.jpg
We Superglued the frag part to the rock.

Same tube as we used to attach another coral on a separate rock with similar Coraline algae and nothing happened to that...

I wonder if it was some kind of reaction to the superglue? Only thing I can think of.

    It's almost straight white now

Lots of tiny feather dusters popping up in a few places, now. I've spotted at least 10 around the tank that have popped up over the last couple weeks.

This is only an RO system. There is no deionizer component, so you might be getting TDS (total dissolved solids) anywhere from a few ppm to 10, 15, 20 pm etc depending on your water quality and pressure. Most reefkeepers run a DI cartridge after the RO membrane to take the TDS down to 0.
