I have two MP40W's one of which decided to have the wetside start spinning, not only the propeller but the entire wetside!  I have tried adjusting the magnetic strength, it doesnt seem to make a difference.  It also appears that on the inside of the wetside it rubbed some or "wore".  Please advise.

Also, I bought a green plate coral, it doesnt seem to be doing well anywhere I put it.  Advise please on placement flow etc...

    Thanks,

    Hey Sean,
Your MP40 was not properly aligned if you see rub marks on the magnet.  Due to the misalignment, I'm betting that the wet side bearing and potentially even the shaft are damaged.  Go here (http://ecotechmarine.com/parts-store/) and order the MP20/MP40 Wet-Side Maintenance Kit.  Install it and I'm betting that fixes your issue.  To me, it sounds like the shaft is getting bound up on the casing and causing the wet side to spin.  Good luck.
I'm assuming you're talking about a fungia and not a plating coral like a monti cap, right?  My plate coral is on the bottom of the tank...low light, low flow.  It's doing pretty good.

AJ, it was lined up correctly, I had them mounted exatcly how instructed with the mounting tape and zip ties, as I have taken it apart it seems like the shaft seized inside the wetside causing the powerful motor to spin the whole thing. I am really frustrated with these mp40s, second issue I have had with them in less than a year. I will took at the kit you are talking about but now that I have look further it looks like the shaft is no longer straight, it looks like it got bent. So now I might need a whole new wetside. Not happy. @ 400 bucks a piece these things seem difficult to keep happy. Hopefully customer service is as good as everyone says.

Did you buy them new? They'll probably replace them. FWIW if things are getting bent, I would put my money on misalignment as well.

I think it bent when it fell. Apparently this is a relatively common problem if you read around. I guess the shaft gets seized and the whole thing spins and falls off. I am not trying to be difficult I just don't see how they could be misaligned. You could hear the motors spinning if they were out of alignment. I don't know what to say. Seems like these should be easy but apparently I am too dumb to put two circles together.

How old are they? Are they the newest gen pumps?

FWIW, they can be difficult to get aligned just right. You have to listen very closely to wait until they are completely silent. I've never experienced the same issue with having the shaft seize up and get bent. I've got 3 MP40s and never had that issue on any of them. That being said, they sell the maintenance kit for a reason....the shaft is plastic, but I can't understand how the shaft would get bent when it's protected by the shroud (I guess they call it the nozzle).

Call Ecotech, they will fix you up.

I had the same issue once Sean when I first got my 40's(where the wet side was spinning). Mine fell off too /DesktopModules/ActiveForums/themes/_default/emoticons/sad.gif  I didn't have mine assembled correctly. After I got it put together right, I also had to run the dry side separated from the wet side for a couple seconds. I went through everything...cleaned it, rechecked the spacer and tank thickness, unplugged it, and finally figured out that I didn't have it put together right.../DesktopModules/ActiveForums/themes/_default/emoticons/crazy.gif  Haven't had an issue since. Hang in there and give ET a call...their service is good....especially Brett! /DesktopModules/ActiveForums/themes/_default/emoticons/biggrin.gif

    Hey Sean

It is common for those shafts to seize & cause a problem like that. Often in reef tanks it is due to a build up of calcium. It is best to dis assemble and soak in vinegar every three months.

Contact Ecotech customer service & they will send out the replacement parts asap. If they dont, let me know.
