I'm 32 from the Des Moines area my whole life and have kept freshwater tanks of all stock and sizes from discus to lungfish and a lot of cichlids since I was 10 years old. I just had a comet feeder goldfish I had since I was 10 die in 2010 and I promised him I would get saltwater fish. Ok that didn't happen but I needed something to justify it to my girlfriend. Over a year ago I went the ill advised difficult route and decided to go with a pico size as my first tank rather than easier to maintain larger tanks. It has gone better than I came to learn it should have, and it actually seems easier than caring for my discus tank was. At the moment I have 2 gallon pico reef and a 3 gallon I recently decommissioned and gave the livestock, corals, rock and sand to a friend who set up his own 75 gallon reef tank. I am planning on setting up a larger tank, around 55-90 gallon in about a year. I am looking for a new house and probably moving in the next year so waiting to set up anything until then. My current setup is a fluval spec I've modified to make it more functional. I raised the overflow level and closed off a lower intake. I put in a stronger pump and made a media rack for the back. I use chemipure elite, chaeto and filter floss in it. For lighting I run an led 8 Watt 14000K Skkye Light. At night the stock light runs shining on the back for the chaeto. In the tank I have aragonite reef sand and fiji live rock. My livestock includes a tiger goby (elacatinus macrodon), zebra hermit, and two snails (nerite and bumblebee). I'm also looking to add a pom pom crab once I find one locally or a group order. Due to the small size I only keep two types of compatible coral, I have a larger colony of radioactive dragoneye polyps and slightly smaller colony of red button poylps.

I have enjoyed the information and interesting posts here and hope to be a part of it for a long time. I look forward to being able to contribute more once I can move beyond the smaller tanks and have more options for livestock, coral, and tank design.

Welcome to saltwater and the club /DesktopModules/ActiveForums/themes/_default//emoticons/smile.gif I think the smaller tanks can be just as much of a challenge as a larger tank, some say more!
