Ok, so my big octogon tank has gone through many revisions throughout its years. Back and fourth with fresh water and marine. It's been around awile.
My goal has been to bring it back to its previous glory and it's been a battle.
No more fancy guppies or African cichlids for this tank. She gets special treatment now.

In my care it's been revised 6 times with its previous owner and 4 times with me.

I believe with my 5th revision she'll be purring like a kitten and won't need to be changed for a very long time.

Reef keeping is definetly the pinnacle of aquarium keeping and everyday new knowledge is gained.

The things you learn compared to freshwater is unparrallel and I am amazed the detail veteran hobbiests achieve making things look so easy but in reality using unnoticeable techniques aquired through many experiences they've acquired from the hardships they've overcome.

    Revision 5:
    Newly designed sump
    Oversized skimmer
    + 8 bio blocks
    Tweaked dosing
    + carbon dosing
    Deep sand bed removed.
    Sand removed in display
    Now barebottom
    + auto top off
    Improved apex equipment
    Improved apex programming

Sounds like you have a pretty good plan.

  3. Planning is indeed key. Nice job on tackling the APEX. I have long debated about adding that element myself but the thought of programming is terrifying. Kudos to you, can't wait to see it coming along. An octagon is indeed a cool and relatively unusual display.
Is it safe to assume it is then a center overflow?
What's the lighting plan and flow plan? I always struggled with the water movement on tanks that didn't have a traditionally defined front/back and sides to attach powerheads to. It'd be a sweet tank to do a closed loop on I would guess!!
