In the next 6 months I am going to set up a new saltwater tank. I used to have a 125g but for the past couple years have only ran a nano tank. The new one will be at least 90 gallons. I haven't decided on a FOWLR or reef setup yet. Anyone have thoughts on a stock or setup? I'd like to hear something you've always wanted to try but don't have the space/time for. I am interested in making people unfamiliar with reef/sw tanks who come in and see it say, "What in the living hell is that?" while at the same time not requiring me to mortgage the house to pay for it.

Glad to hear that you will be upgrading!

I am in the process of upgrading back to a larger tank right now! I made some very calculated decisions when starting this build that make it very unique yet special to me!

I decided to go with a 90 gallon build, but the 120 option with similar footprint is a great choice also! Love these two sizes and the 120 gives you a little more options that the 90, but for me, space was an issue!!!!

I also went with a custom built stand from Kpotter2 out of our very own club! One of the best choices for this build!!!! It was fantastic working with him and he gave me the option to make the stand exactly what I wanted for the build and was reasonable to work with!

I am going to custom mount LED lights for the tank because I will be doing a reef!!!! Every time I go FOWLR I want to go reef!!!! This adds a little more money to the build, but I will never have to worry about cooling my tank and the expense that goes along with a chiller and it is going to save me money and pay back in about a year.

Filtration is a basic sump for me that will allow me to have a refugium....

I WILL NOT BE TAKING ABOUT A SECOND MORTGAGE TO PAY FOR THIS BUILD but have been collecting what I need over about two months to make it affordable.

Also because of the club, will get a lot of frags slowly over time to make it gorgeous!

I've had a 29,two 75's,90 and a 125, by far the 90 was my favorite, I have a small living room and the foot print worked well for me.
I WILL have another 90 some day.
FWIW-- I ran AI's over it and the coverage was great.
    Good luck & have fun!

I am considering the AIs for lighting. I am tempted to do DIY though from Steve's LEDs. I can get the kit I need for $600 instead of $1800+ with AI. I don't think I can run a 125 gallon with 3 AI Sols. I believe I'd need 4 from what I've read. If I need 4 I'm inclined to go the DIY route and maybe do an upgrade to the kit.

I have a 125 and I only have 3 AI lights on it. Been that way for a year, no problems.

I run a 125 and 150 gallon tanks no problems with 3 ai's on each. For over a year. I think 4 is overkill. If you get the right optics and hang them at the correct height you can get a nice spread.

Good to know. I will have to keep an eye out for good deals on AI lights.
