Definitely buying some vortechs for my 180. Few softies, but mostly zoas and a TON OF SPS. If this was your setup, what ones would you buy?
Sand is a mixture of larger sand, and fine sand. Heavier stuff on top. I have 3500gph, plus my panworld 1270gph pump. I want more flow, and all the gizmos that come with it!

I have both the MP60wES and 2 MP40wES. My DT is 6" long. I started with the 40's but the flow wouldn't really reach to the opposite end nor make the wave that I wanted. The 60 is awesome :=0) My rec would be the MP60wES. SPS will love it!

Have you thought about the tunze wave box? I personally haven't tried the tunze but want to. I had a vortech on my bio cube. It worked great but three tank was right next to my chair and hated the whined up noise and got real annoying. Other than that good pump though and must agree if you do them go with the mp60

I would do 2 40s over 1 60 myself. with a couple 10s in the back of the tank.

I have 2 MP40's on my 180 gallon at my house, and run a Tunze 6045 on the back wall through the center. Plenty of flow for the entire tank. However I would also recommend buying the MP60 since they have way more power and can push the current farther in the tank.

MP10's are a no go on a 180 gallon tank glass is too thick. I wish they would work though because it would be sweet!

Why not call EcoTech and see what they recommend? There's a number of factors to consider.

Ecotech for a 180 gallon system recommends 3 MP40 total.  1 on each end of the tank and 1 on the back side.

I was thinking one mp60 on the side, and two 40's on the back. Hmm?

That's a bummer too! Originally I wanted two mp10's on the back and two 40's on the side /DesktopModules/ActiveForums/themes/_default/emoticons/sad.gif. Wonder if they is anyway around this?

There's no way around it.  The magnets are not designed for the thicker glass.

Consider tunzes too. I have two 6105s and theyre comparable to 40s/60s... Cheaper too!

Tunze are great pumps but I recommend Vortech's over them. Better flow and more control. Plus looks better in the tank IMO. Although they are both great pumps!!!

I use 4 MP40s on my 180g SPS tank. I originally tried what Ecotech recommended with one on each side and one on the back but had to turn the back one down extremely low or it would kick all the sand out from the front of the tank. Decided that was pretty much a waste of an MP40 so I bought a 4th one and now have two on each side and nothing on the back. This setup works well for me now.

I had that issue on my 250. I had one MP40 on each side and one on the back wall. I would have to turn the back one down so much to keep the sand from moving around it was pretty pointless having it there. And that was shooting across a 3ft depth. I couldn't imagine one on the back wall of a 24" or 18" wide tank.
You can always start with a few MP40s and if you don't like the flow sell them off and get the MP60. They do hold their value pretty well.

The tunzes give you directional control you can't get with mp40s and are controllable. I agree theyre bulkier but the price savings was worth it imo.

I definitely want vortechs. I like the sleek design. I'll probably start with two, and make my way from there. Thanks all for the input
