So after getting high phosphate results Im going to start changing my gfo and carbon every 2 weeks instead of once a month sometimes a little longer :/ (oops)

Since the meeting on testing I changed my gfo and carbon i also added another cup of gfo as I was running very little.

As a result my phosphates have dropped from 2.06 to 1.20.

I plan on continuing the routine to change them both out every 2 weeks.

How often does everyone else change out their gfo and carbon?

Do you think my new routine will be effective?

Thanks in advance for your input

I run mine longer than I should.

Do you use the carbon and gfo separate or are they mixed together?

If you were running them separately you could swap out the gfo without wasting the carbon.

I run them separately but from everything ive read and heard carbon actually gets used up fairly fast compared to gfo.

There is a test I saw on brs tv with a white bucket you can put some of your tank water in it then set it next to a new container of saltwater the tank water if the carbon is used up will have a yellow or brownish hue to it where the new water will have a blueish hue to it.

I change carbon about every 6 weeks - would probably do it every 4 weeks but its a pain changing the reactor. I usually run GFO 2-3 months. But then, my phosphate levels are low to start. They usually are up to about .06 or .07 when I change the medium. If you have alot of phosphates, then the absorbtion capacity of the media is used up much quicker. I don't remember if there is a formula that gives you an idea of the amt of phosphates that GFO can absorb. If I were you, I'd probably check the phosphate level on a weekly basis for awhile. If the phosphate level has decreased a reasonable amt from the previous week, I wouldn't bother changing it. Once it stops decreasing or starts to increase - then I'd change it again. Repeat until the phosphates are at where you want them to be, then you should be able to leave the GFO for longer periods of time and also not test as frequently. My 2 cents!

Im just confused as to why my phosphates are that high :/ i read something on reef2reef where he changes his every 2 weeks and his phosphates are now undetectable but before they were high.

Only problem is it can be expensive hopefully when I get them down I can go a little longer

I agree with Janette. You may have to change out weekly until it gets lower. Then monthly should be fine. Higher po4 uses up go pretty quickly.
I change mine monthly. Both carbon and gfo. I change gfo sooner if I notice algae popping up or glass cleaning becomes more frequent.

Thanks for the input. I will do that @beckerj3@beckerj3 and @jeremy@jeremy ill see where its at next week and then determine if I should change or not.

With Higher phosphates you're going to be using up GFO faster. Get it low and it will last longer.

That's the battle I have been going through as well. How often to change it. I bought a bigger reactor, and got my GFO off ebay. Doesn't feel so bad throwing it away after a few weeks when the phosphates stop dropping.

I use a bashea aquatics reactor not sure on the model but its the bigger one.

I was only using 2 cups of gfo on my 275g water volume system so i increased that first... but i was really bad with changing it out maybe once a month. Now i have an alert in my phone every 2 weeks then when it goes down try it a little longer

On my tank it seems like it is taking forever to come down. It dropped pretty good for awhile then slowed to a crawl. I think I let it go so long the rocks and everything had so much built up that's finally leaching back out.
I've heard of people rinsing GFO to get a little more life out of it. There is also a way to recharge it, but I decided against trying that out. Buying cheaper GFO seemed like an easier option.

You just need to get an algae scrubber. I can refer you to a guy who makes them but it might be a bit before he gets you one :)

@Armydog@Armydog did you get your zeo running yet? Won't some of that stuff take your po4 down? Or do you run both?

Got one. The big one even. Doesn't begin to keep up with a 250 gallon tank full of some big tangs. I also run biopellets with a nice big skimmer and so far the balance seems to be good enough that I am still getting good algae growth on the scrubber. Have even thought of adding vodka/vinegar dosing to the mix and even setting up a remote deep sand bed too. I don't like to depend too much on one source of nutrient export.

Cool. Yeah I just went to the zeo forum and did a little looking around. Just checking out basic stuff. Looks pretty good. How close are you on your alk?

Have you thought about doing lanthanum chloride drip? At least to drop the initial high phosphate and then move to gfo? I did that in years past and it worked quite well and once the phosphate was under control gfo lasted a month or two, although some large system just maintain a constant lanthanum drip before fine media.

I also always used to recharge my gfo too. I bought the large size container from BRS and would put exhausted gfo in another container until I was almost out and then recharge a large batch to last me almost a year.

I change mine the first day of every month, that way I never forget.

You can try to run some Sea Klear. Make sure you research it and have a plan. It is best added in very small dilutions, and then filtered out mechanically

I read about that @hart@hart but idk if I really want to do that. I think my issue was not changing it enough i checked it tonight and its down to .82 so I think with my alams in my phone to change it out I should be good.

With my zeo reactor I plan on modifying it a bit eventually with an air line for an air pump then program my controller to turn it on once a day for 30 sec ;) so I dont forget to clean the zeovit when I get that running

That's good to see it's working. I agree that it was probably just not being changed enough vs. a major issue.
