For years I have either had NO sand or had just enough to cover the bottom.  I have always been someone who thinks that deep sand beds are ticking time bombs just waiting to explode their nutrients into the tank all at once nuking everything or constantly leeching PO4 into your system causing nothing but problems.  After deciding I NEEDED to own a Blue Spot Jaw Fish I decided that in order for it survive and prosper it was going to need a serious sand bed.  Well I certainly hope it's happy because I broke my cardinal rule in reef keeping to stick with what I know works.  Hopefully this DSB thing works.
I just added nearly 30 pounds to my tank and I really like the look of it.  Not only that, I can now clean all of the glass as the spots I couldn't quite reach before are now covered with sand.  I gotta tell ya' my tank is looking pretty sweet like this but I am sort of curious on how much of a cycle I will have if any.  I am expecting a diatom bloom, hopefully that's all it will be.
I would take some pics but the tank is a tad cloudy, so I'll get some taken tomorrow night after its totally clear again.

I had a very DSB (5-7+") on my 135 for 12 years. I didn't run a skimmer until the last few months and that was mostly cause i was curious how much it would pull out. I can't say it harmed anything and I never had a crash even when I completely ignored it for a while.

I wouldn't even think about buying one if I didn't have a tight fitting lid.
I have wanted one forever!  It's nice to see they are coming down in price lately.

I have had a blue jaw in my open top tank now for 6 months and no jumps YET. Funny thing is I had the volitan (pictured in my profile) jump out and land in my recliner, when I came home from work I was sad to see the Lion fish dried to my leather recliner. Thank God I did not sit down
