I was moving my 90 gallon tank that I'm working on setting up and I chipped it. Not just a little chip, but a massive 1 1/4 inch chip. I'm attaching a few pics hoping to get ideas on what I should do. And wouldn't you know, it's right in the middle of the front edge. Anyway, if someone can help me figure out what I need to do about this, that would be great. I don't know if the tank is ruined or not. I'm concerned about the integrity of the glass. Should I just try to replace the front or what? I'm just sick about this. I've put so much work into cleaning it and making it look nice and now this.

Oh yeah, I just noticed the red flecks in the first picture. That's the color of my car which is what the tank hit. I was moving the tank from the garage to the family room and figured it would be easier to go thru the front door. The tank was on a 4 wheeled moving cart. I was moving it around my red car and one of the wheels went off the driveway. The ground is soft, the wheel stuck in place and the tank shifted hitting the rear wheel well of my car. Here are a few pics of how nice I had it looking before I majorly screwed it up.

Hey Aaron, its really hard to tell by the pictures. There is a small chip in my 125 and it has been fine for the last 2-3 years. Your first picture doesnt look so bad, but the 2nd one looks really bad.

Could you take some more pictures from a couple feet back with a few more angles?

Did it chip one piece or both?

I hope it was the back of the tank so you don't get mad at yourself every time you look at the tank!

The first picture is from the front. As you can see, the width of the chip inside the glass is almost the same as the thickness of the side piece. The second picture is from the side. It's right in the front right edge about 2/3 of the way up. There's no way that someone is missing that... In picture #2, from the top of the chip to the bottom, it's 1 1/4"

That sucks!!! In my opinion I would not trust it to hold up. If it does hold water what would happen if it were even bumped? I would be scared all the time if it were me. If you can replace the one pane of glass go for it. Other wise you may want to think about replacing it. I have seen tanks with chips that never have a problem and seen one that held water and did not leak for a few months then all of a sudden BOOM the entire pane broke out. So it is up to you what you want to do, If it were me, I would not use it like that. Sorry, Shaun

That totaly sucks! I would say your best bet is to replace it and if you are going to replace it might as well see about geting starfire glass. If you go this route and have no experiance resealing a tank I have done it a million time practicaly a pro so if you need help I am willing to stop by the day you are going to do it and show you how or do it for you. Anyway that sucks!

Dude, that total sucks man. After all the work you have been putting into this setup. If you still want me to swing by this weekend and check out the plumbing situation, I will also check the tank out and give you my opinion. But not ever haveing to experence that problem before. I would say you might want to consider replacing the glass or the hole tank. I wouldnt want to risk it springing a leak, or worse just blow out on you.

To be honest I would not worry.

I have taken tanks apart & you wont belive how incredible strong that corner bond is. I took a large hammer to break up a broken up 125 & I had a hell of a time breaking it up into smaller pieces.

If in doubt fill it with water in the garage & put the biggest pump & wavemaker you can find in it & let it run for a couple weeks.

I think you'll be fine too. Fill it with a glob of silicone and call it a day.

Well, I think the bigger factor is my wife at this point. It scares her to have it set up that way, and honestly, it would make me quite nervous too... On top of that, this is for my display tank, not a sump. I don't think it would ever stop bothering me to use it as is. ckoppell just cracked a 90 about a week ago...I'm going to pick that one up to see if it's got a usable piece of glass on it. If so, I'll replace the glass with that. I called Iowa Glass and a 24x48x3/8 piece of tempered glass (not even starphire or another low lead variant) would be $300. I just assumed that I needed tempered glass. I know the bottom is tempered, but I don't know about the sides. Anyone know what a new 90g RR tank runs?

The glass doesn;t need to be tempered for the sides. That is why it is so expensive. For 300 bucks you could probably get a brand new tank with internal overflow already set up for you.

There right it probaly would hold but that would drive me crazy looking at that chip in the front all the time! That is crazy $300 for that size piece of glass. I bought a piece of glass close to that size before and it was only about $40.

Ha!  The car is an old beater so I'm not concerned about it.  It already had paint issues and one of my neighbors hit it this winter so one more scratch isn't anything to worry about on that thing...  /DesktopModules/ActiveForums/themes/_default/emoticons/wink.gif

It would probably hold, but aesthetically, I would not like looking at the big chip daily......plus, the thought of it breaking, even if it's a remote possibility, will drive you bonkers, say, when you're on vacation etc.

Yeah, my thoughts too.  I'll get it repaired or replaced, but it certainly does put a crimp in my plans.
