I sure am glad we had the tank tour a few weeks ago and not this weekend.  I noticed a couple days ago some of my corals didn't look quite right.  The ORA Hawkins blue was a tad brown and some of my acans were retracted.  I looked again today and notices my blue tort had some tissue loss and my Hawkins blue was looking extra crappy.   Checked my salinity and somehow it got all the way down to 1.021.  I did a water change today to give it a little bump, as well as added a little salt to my ATO water to bump it back up the rest of the way slowly.  I am gonna be bummed if I loose some coral over this. I am still puzzled at how my salinity got so low as I usually run it a smidge high.
I sure with there was some sort of AFFORDABLE salinity monitoring system available as this could have been easily prevented.  I know there are some controllers out there that can measure salinity or specific gravity but just the probes alone are crazy expensive.
Anyway, I hope everything survives and colors back up soon, this is my first "Ooops" in quite awhile, hopefully they will be far and in between from here on out.

That sucks... I agree that a salinity monitor would be nice (you'd think that we'd have monitors for just about everything by now). If you end up losing your hawkin's blue or your tort let me know and I'll hook you up.

Thanks JB, hoping it won't come to that but I appreciate the offer.

Sorry to hear that man. Hope you can get it turned back around! That is one of the downfalls with a nano is swings in parameters and salinity

I've noticed that dosing with Vitamin C seems to sometimes help the corals that are ailing.......if you have some pure vit C around, certainly couldn't hurt. Hope they make it. Annoying that you don't know what caused it....I hate when stuff like that happens.

The corals in question look about the same as they did yesterday, hopefully that means they won't get any worse before they get better. I think I figured out why my salinity was so low, I think it was due to my skimmer "skimming wet" and my ATO making up for the missing water. I need to figure out a way so that doesn't happen again. The first thing i need to do is adjust my skimmer.

Isn't it interesting how the water volume makes such a big difference.  Set your skimmer to skim wet and it would take a really long time for it to impact a 120 with a sump.  On a nano, it doesn't take that long at all.   Glad to hear that it sounds like everything is going to make it.

Looks like I spoke too soon. ORA Hawkins Blue, Purple monster, and a blue tort frag are pretty sluffed all their tissues off last night. Also it looks like my Midas Blenny is gonna crook too. Lame.

Wow. Sorry to hear. Wonder what caused that type of dip in salinity.

Ugh. Sorry to hear that Jeremy. I lost my blue tort that I got from Fall Fest too. Loosing corals *sucks*! Let's hope it stops there.

im looking into the reefkeeper controllers now just cause they have a salinity probe/expansion for them after reading this it seems like that would be a good thing to look at if your looking for a new controller

Don't do it Chris. Stick with an Aquacontrller. Everyone seems to hate the reefkeepers and supposedly their CS is not too good.

i already have a reefkeeper 2. i haven't minded it really. and the ability to control an ATO with it is helpful as well. alot more control and better price, but i hear what your saying though. i'm still up in the air. i just need a small one for the new tank to control the temp basically, thats why i was looking at the reefkeepers cause for 100 bucks you get controller, thermo, and 4 outlets.

The Apex has a salinity monitor...it just became available this month. It requires the PM2 module for the salinity probe port.
