Question...I have a DP-650 (a Dolphin brand pump) pinwheel pump for a small EuroReef skimmer.  The problem is, the pump does not want to start up properly.  Sometimes I can smack it and it will start up, and run just fine, but when I power it down, it won't restart again without intervention.  Anyone had this issue and know what it takes to fix it?

How long has it been dry sitting dry? I noticed some pumps after setting out for a while they have trouble starting for a while. I have a mag5 that was doing that and hopefully that is the case.

I've had that type of problem with a Mag 3.   A small piece of the impeller broke off.  You couldn't tell very well by looking at it.  But a small piece had broken off and so it didn't turn the shaft properly.  I replaced the impeller and the pump worked fine.  Actually I've replaced the impeller twice now.  I've had the pump for 6 yrs now.

Yes, it has a ceramic shaft and has been sitting dry for about a month. I was told that prior to that, it worked great. If you can get it to start, it runs, fine once started. In fact, it's running now. I'm going to let it run overnight and see how it performs in the morning.

A new impeller would probably do the trick...but I hate to spend more money on this without knowing for sure.

I noticed my mag5,even after a week, still is having problems after I shut it off! Hope you have better luck then I do. And if not just beat the pump /DesktopModules/ActiveForums/themes/_default/emoticons/wink.gif That usually works for me haha!

Wow...a few hours after the original post and this thread is already indexed on Google. Impressive! Either they crawl the Internet with amazing frequency or I posted this right before their web crawler hit our site.

Oh, and about the pump, I've talked to the seller and I'm going to return it. I would hate to run into long term issues on something that I just got.

my guess is a build up on the shaft and inside the impeller. either soak it in vinegar or pull it apart and use a razor blade to clean shaft and then push the shaft through the impeller multiple times realy fast

Good to know snowman...I got another one of the same skimmers coming, but this time, the guy is shooting a video to show it working before it gets shipped. I will add the the original person that I was dealing with was awesome about taking it back, refunding my money *and* paying to ship it back. It was Scott Kardell of the LINOMA reef club. Thank you Scott!
