This Monday is my birthday and to celebrate the hell of a year 24 has been I want to go and get a new tattoo. What I am in need of is some cool sw fish that would make for a great underwater tattoo. The first piece will be a mimic octopus on my knee and then work my way down from the knee to make a leg sleeve over time.
Currently some of the animals I would like to include is a crazy looking angler fish as well as some jellies. I am wanting to find other oddities of the ocean to include in this sleeve. The mimic will be the first thing I get and I am really set on that, but as far as the rest of the tat I have alot of thinking yet as to what to include. I don't want any kind of tangs/clowns or really common fish, I want to find some true oddities.  Maybe some stone fish or anything else that screams cool. So if you could come up with a list of fish that are not your avarge run of the mill fish that I could do research on and find a way to work into this leg piece that would be awesome! Like I said I know the mimic will be the tattoo I go and get for my birthday but this will be a piece I will work on for a good many years adding new and crazy fish along my journey of life. So if you can think of some crazy neat odd looking fish, please feel free to toss them in this tread.... or even better yet if you have a sw tattoo I would love to see it to get more ideas.
Thanks for everyone's help. I can't wait to see some of the species you guys come up with.  And please if you hate tattoos don't talk smack. My tattoos mean a great deal to me and are really personal regardless what they will look like in 60 years or what you personally think of them...not to sound like a jerk but I have seen many of tattoo threads go to crap fast. So again thank you for all your help! /DesktopModules/ActiveForums/themes/_default/emoticons/cool.gif

sweet dude! I've always wanted to do the same! But it's been years since I've had a tattoo. I've been making the decision to buy more aquarium stuff rather than tats! lol Tough call!
I would get a blue ring octopus, melenurus wrasse, rhinopias scorpion fish. I also love sw game fish, I would get a dolphin fish (mahi), marlin/sail/wahoo (some type of mackerel). Or I would love to have a sleeve of a New England rocky shore community at low tide, where theres like rocks and a pisaster star eating the clusters of mussels and ulva sea weed and barnacles! Or you could do an ironic one where you have an orange shoulder tang on your shoulder! lol Flying gurnards or grayling are really cool. I also love salmonids, I would have a bull trout or a steel head. Or like a muskie! Big ol bastards with teeth! Man IDK.....I just like all fish....you could do a flounder or a halibut. I would probably do a whole fishing schooner with gear deployed on my left shoulder blade. This is tough decision where to start! .....A miniatus grouper!
    Good luck man!

Flamboyant Cuttlefish, seahorses, and pipefish are pretty cool too. If you really wanted some cool examples, you should pick up Discovery Channel's "Planet Earth" and watch "The Blue Planet". There's some really cool stuff on there.

It might be cheaper somewhere else, I just wanted to show you the DVD set I was talking about, it was on Animal Planet last night!

Sweet and I hope you have an awesome birthday Monday!! Although not uncommon, a harlequin tusk and harlequin shrimp/sexy shrimp are way cool! Cuttlefish and anglers are cool too! Good luck and post up a pic after you get the tat!

My right forearm is Mr. Krabs and Ernie and Bernie the jellies from Shark Tale. My right leg, shin to calf is a Rock Beauty. Keep this in mind, unless the artist is REALLY good or your happen to have the right skin, yellows and white(especially white) seem to be notorious for getting pushed out. I can only seem to keep white in if its not the base color.

I see alot of people with nautical stars on their elbows, I think an awesome look would be some kind of star(marine) instead. Perhaps a General Star since they are blood red or perhaps some sort of fromia species or even a crown of thorns. I would say brittle/bristle but not on a point of articulation of the body because of the length of arms and smaller round body size might look goofy.

Just to put another bug in your brain, ribbon eels...

O i so like where this thread is going, so completely awesome ideas! Jack at skin kitchen tends to do all my work but if I could find someone that works closer with wildlife tattoos I would for sure check them out. I have an appointment afterwork to get a price and idea of time for the octo tat. I will post up what we come up with and how we can work some of these other awesome critters into this tattoo... I am so pumped!
